Nvidia 'dominates' the graphics card market, AMD and Intel are struggling to catch up

GPU market paradox: Nvidia is criticized as 'boring' but still achieves historic market share of 92%, AMD "runs out of breath" despite being popular with gamers?

According to TechSpot , despite the criticism of the new RTX 50 series of graphics cards for lacking innovation, Nvidia has just achieved an unprecedented market dominance milestone, capturing 92% of the global GPU market share in Q1/2025. Meanwhile, AMD, despite significant technological advances, is left behind with only 8% market share.

Nvidia continues to break out in the graphics card market

According to the latest report from the prestigious analysis firm Jon Peddie Research, the overall picture of the discrete graphics card market in Q1/2025 shows a surprising difference. A total of 9.2 million GPUs were sold, up more than 8% compared to the same period last year, but the majority of the 'pie' fell into the hands of Nvidia. The 'green team' sold millions of RTX 50 series GPUs, while AMD's Radeon 9000 series sales reached less than 750,000 units, causing their market share to fall to a record low.

According to analysts, the main reason is that AMD is not producing enough output. AMD itself admitted that it faced unprecedented demand for cards like the RX 9070 XT, showing that they were surprised and could not meet the demand. In addition, AMD also had to balance the supply of semiconductor chips from TSMC for both Radeon GPUs and Ryzen 9000 CPUs, which are also very hot, creating a difficult production problem.

However, there are still glimmers of hope for the 'red team'. Sales data in Germany shows that AMD has even surpassed Nvidia, showing that if they can solve the manufacturing problem, they can completely turn the situation around.

It's worth noting that Nvidia has achieved great success despite the RTX 50 series being said to offer little performance improvement over the previous generation. Their gaming revenue still skyrocketed to a record $3.8 billion.

One quiet factor behind this success may be that high-end consumer GPUs (like the RTX series) are increasingly being purchased by startups and indie developers for small-scale AI tasks, a demand that has inadvertently boosted sales of Nvidia’s gaming graphics cards.

AMD is no slouch when it comes to technology. Their latest Radeon series has finally caught up to Nvidia in ray tracing performance and upscaling. Products like the Radeon 9070 XT with its massive VRAM capacity have proven to be competitive, even surpassing their direct competitors and even reaching more expensive cards like the RTX 5080 in some games.

The upcoming battle will be focused on the mainstream segment with models like the RTX 5060 and RX 9060. While AMD is racing to increase production, Nvidia is likely to reduce its focus on gaming GPUs to focus on its real 'golden egg': AI chips. This could be an opportunity for AMD and Intel to regain market share.
