Lyon FC faces a heavy penalty from UEFA. |
Lyon is going through a turbulent period despite still having a chance to qualify for the Champions League next season. According to the Telegraph , UEFA suspects the French club has not fulfilled its financial obligations as committed last summer.
Lyon currently sit fourth in Ligue 1, just one point ahead of Rennes before the final round of matches. A win against Lens would secure them a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
However, even if they meet the professional requirements, Lyon could still be banned from participating in European competitions.
Back in 2025, UEFA's Club Financial Control Body sanctioned Lyon, along with Aston Villa and Chelsea, for violating financial sustainability rules. Lyon was fined £10.7 million and relegated to Ligue 2 before successfully appealing the decision.
According to an agreement with UEFA, Lyon's owners must inject an additional €60 million into the club and convert it into equity before October 15, 2025. However, the Telegraph reports that this has not yet been completed.
UEFA usually avoids imposing bans on big clubs, but the possibility of Lyon being disqualified from European competition is still being considered if the team fails to demonstrate compliance with the regulations.
A financial crisis is casting a shadow over the Groupama Stadium club. Lyon has just announced a loss of 186 million euros for the second half of 2025.
The club is currently run by businesswoman Michele Kang and the investment fund Ares Management, following a chaotic period under John Textor. Textor's multi-ownership Eagle Football model is believed to have plunged Lyon into significant debt and losses.
Meanwhile, Gones Radio, citing internal sources at Lyon, asserted that the club is still working directly with UEFA and has not violated any financial commitments as rumored. Lyon stated that their current priority remains securing European qualification on the pitch before addressing any behind-the-scenes issues.
