For many years, Mr. Bui Duc Luan, born in 1957 in Zone 6, Son Vi Commune, Lam Thao District, has been a successful farmer, applying scientific and technical methods to his integrated farm model of pig farming combined with fish farming and fruit tree cultivation, generating billions of dong in income each year and creating regular jobs with stable income for dozens of local workers.

Mr. Luan is a good businessman. The integrated farm model of Mr. Bui Duc Luan's family in Zone 6, Son Vi commune, Lam Thao district, yields high economic efficiency.

Driven by a desire to prosper on his homeland, and to acquire the necessary knowledge, he initially actively participated in training courses on scientific and technical aspects of livestock farming and crop cultivation organized by the province, district, and commune. He also learned through books and newspapers, and visited successful economic models in various localities to gain experience. In 1998, his family boldly took on 1 hectare of low-lying paddy land to cultivate one rice crop and raise one fish crop. In 2001, with support for production development in terms of plant and animal breeds, his family began investing in raising 15 breeding sows, and simultaneously converted the entire area of low-yield rice cultivation to aquaculture combined with fruit tree cultivation.

In 2017, his family's pig herd expanded to over 5,000 pigs. However, shortly afterward, pork prices plummeted to just over 6,000 VND/kg, causing his family to lose more than 10 billion VND; in 2018, African swine fever struck, causing pork prices to fall rapidly, and he couldn't find buyers for his pigs.

He shared: “During those difficult times, my family always received constant care, support, and assistance, as well as timely and active intervention from various levels of government and organizations to overcome difficulties. Thanks to that, I always remained calm and confident in the path I had chosen to overcome. After each failure, I learned valuable lessons for myself.”

Despite facing difficulties, and while continuing to maintain the pig farm, he and his family members actively learned to find the most suitable and effective farming methods. According to Mr. Luan, in the era of Industry 4.0, applying scientific and technological advancements to production is key to sustainable development, and biosecure pig farming brings high economic efficiency, protects the environment, ensures disease safety, and improves product quality.

At his family farm, pig farming waste is pressed into pulp and liquid. The pulp is packaged and sold as fertilizer for crops at a price of about 20,000 VND per 20kg bag, while the liquid is passed through a settling and filtering system before flowing into a pond to feed the fish. With over 4 hectares of water surface, his family raises fish semi-industrially, mainly fingerlings and traditional fish species such as grass carp, silver carp, common carp, bighead carp, tilapia, etc.

Mr. Luan is a good businessman.

Nearly 200 eight-year-old macadamia trees are growing and developing well.

Currently, Mr. Luan's family's integrated farm model covers a total area of over 7 hectares, comprising 3 facilities for raising pigs using biosafety practices, aquaculture, and fruit tree cultivation. The model maintains a closed-loop system raising 200 sows, over 2,000 fattening pigs, semi-industrial fish farming, and cultivating fruit trees such as Dien pomelo, jackfruit, longan, and macadamia nuts.

Each year, the farm sells over 500 tons of pork and nearly 100 tons of fish, generating a net income of over 3.5 billion VND after deducting expenses. This creates regular employment for 20 workers with stable incomes of 9-12 million VND per person per month, and dozens of seasonal workers.

Mr. Luan further shared: "Currently, my family is finalizing the procedures to build a feed factory to supply animal feed, creating jobs for local workers. In the future, I hope to continue applying scientific and technological advancements to production, expand the scale, and eventually build a facility to supply breeding pigs to livestock farms, while creating more and more jobs for local workers."

Mr. Chu Duc Oanh, Chairman of the Son Vi Commune People's Committee, said: “The commune encourages households and farms to cooperate in developing production, continuously improving the quality of agricultural products, and creating commodity production areas. Besides being a dynamic and successful businessman, Mr. Luan is also enthusiastic in helping and sharing his experience in livestock and crop development with many people inside and outside the commune who want to learn. He also always sets a good example by participating in various movements, donating hundreds of millions of dong to many humanitarian and charitable programs, the 'For the Poor' fund, disease prevention, disaster relief, education promotion, victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, and new rural development... in the locality.”

For his efforts in contributing to the development of his homeland, he was awarded the Third-Class Labor Medal in 2015 and was one of 100 outstanding farmers honored by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association as an "Excellent Vietnamese Farmer" in 2023. He was also the only representative from the province to attend the Conference to commend elderly people excelling in economic activities during the period 2018-2023, and received a Certificate of Merit from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association.

Mr. Luan is a shining example of a pioneer in economic development, poverty reduction, and the transformation of the agricultural economic structure, contributing to the promotion of local production movements and creating motivation for many others to rise up and legitimately become wealthy on their homeland.
