For many years, Mr. Bui Duc Luan, born in 1957 in Zone 6, Son Vi Commune, Lam Thao District, has been a good farmer, applying science and technology to a comprehensive farm model of pig farming combined with fish farming and fruit tree growing, earning billions of dong each year, creating regular jobs with stable income for dozens of local workers.

Mr. Luan is good at economics. The comprehensive farm model of Mr. Bui Duc Luan's family in zone 6, Son Vi commune, Lam Thao district brings high economic efficiency.

With the desire to get rich on his homeland land, to gain knowledge, he initially actively participated in training courses on science and technology in livestock and crop farming organized by the province, district and commune, and learned through books and newspapers, and visited effective economic models in many localities to learn from experience. In 1998, his family boldly received 1 hectare of low-lying land to grow 1 crop of rice and raise 1 crop of fish. In 2001, with support for developing production of plants and breeds, his family began to invest in raising 15 sows, and at the same time converted the entire ineffective rice growing area to aquaculture combined with fruit tree growing.

In 2017, his family's pig herd grew to over 5,000 pigs. However, shortly after, the price of pigs dropped to just over 6,000 VND/kg, causing his family to lose over 10 billion VND; in 2018, African swine fever struck, causing pork prices to plummet rapidly, and he wanted to sell his pigs but there were no buyers.

He shared: “During those difficult times, my family always received regular attention, help, and sharing, and the timely and active participation of sectors, authorities, and organizations to overcome difficulties. Thanks to that, I always remained calm and believed in the path I had chosen to overcome. After each failure, I learned a lesson for myself.”

After the difficulties, along with continuing to maintain the barn, he and his family members actively learn to find the most suitable and effective way to raise livestock. According to Mr. Luan, in the era of science and technology 4.0, the application of scientific and technological advances in production is the key to sustainable development, in which biosafety pig farming brings high economic efficiency, environmental protection, disease safety and improved product quality.

At his family farm, waste from pig farming is put into a press to form pulp and water, in which the pulp is packaged and sold as fertilizer for plants at a price of about 20,000 VND/20kg bag, the water is put into a settling tank system and then flows into the pond to feed the fish. With an area of over 4 hectares of water surface, his family raises fish semi-industrially, mainly fingerlings and traditional fish such as grass carp, bighead carp, common carp, bighead carp, birds, tilapia...

Mr. Luan is good at economics.

Nearly 200 8-year-old macadamia trees are growing well.

Currently, Mr. Luan's family's integrated farm model has a total area of over 7 hectares, including 3 facilities for raising safe biological pigs, aquaculture and combining fruit trees. The model is maintaining a closed system of raising 200 sows, more than 2,000 pigs, semi-industrial fish farming and growing fruit trees such as Dien grapefruit, jackfruit, longan, macadamia...

Every year, the farm sells more than 500 tons of pork and nearly 100 tons of fish, deducting expenses for an income of more than 3.5 billion VND, creating regular jobs for 20 workers with a stable income of 9-12 million VND/person/month and dozens of seasonal workers.

Mr. Luan added: My family is currently completing procedures to build a feed factory to provide animal feed, creating jobs for local workers. In the future, I hope to continue applying scientific and technological advances to production, expanding the scale and moving towards building a facility to provide parent pigs for livestock farms, while creating more and more jobs for local workers.

Mr. Chu Duc Oanh - Chairman of Son Vi Commune People's Committee said: "The commune encourages households and farms to cooperate to develop production, increasingly improve the quality of agricultural products, and create commodity production areas. In addition to being active and good at economics, Mr. Luan is also enthusiastic in helping and sharing experiences in developing livestock and crop farming with many people in and outside the commune who want to learn. He is also always exemplary in participating in movements, supporting hundreds of millions of VND for many humanitarian and charity programs, funds for the poor, disease prevention, natural disasters, education and talent promotion, victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, new rural construction... in the locality".

With his efforts to contribute to the construction of his homeland, he was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal in 2015 and was one of 100 excellent farmers honored by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union as "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" in 2023. He was the only representative of the province to attend the Conference to honor the elderly who are good at economics in the period of 2018 - 2023, and received a Certificate of Merit from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association.

Mr. Luan is a shining example of leading economic development, poverty reduction, and restructuring of the agricultural economy, contributing to promoting the local production movement, motivating many others to strive to become rich legitimately on their homeland.
