"Bilateral relations have always developed well and strongly," President Putin said as he hosted his African counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, for talks in Moscow on June 3.
President Putin noted that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and stated that bilateral trade increased by 25% last year. The Russian president also emphasized that economic cooperation needs to continue to expand.
According to the Russian leader, opportunities for growth exist in many sectors, including energy, geological exploration, transport, logistics, healthcare, and education .
The Russian leader noted that the Tanzanian president had chosen Moscow for her first state visit after taking office in November 2025.
Meanwhile, President Samia said the visit held “special significance” for her personally and for Tanzania.
She noted that more than half a century had passed since the previous state visit, when Julius Nyerere, the first president of this African nation, visited the Soviet Union in 1969.
The Tanzanian leader also expressed gratitude for Russia's role in African liberation movements and stressed that Russia has made significant contributions to Tanzania's development over the past decades.
"We have been cooperating with Russia, and with the strong development we are seeing in my country, Russia has made a huge contribution," the Tanzanian leader said.
The talks took place after Tanzania hosted the third meeting of the Russia-Tanzania Intergovernmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation in May 2026.
During the meeting, Kitila Alexander Mkumbo, Minister of State for Planning and Investment in the Office of the President of Tanzania, stated that developing cooperation in the agricultural sector could significantly contribute to food security and job creation.
