OpenAI is in negotiations to sell approximately $6 billion worth of shares in a secondary offering, valuing the company at around $500 billion.
Foreign media reported on August 15th that these shares will be sold by current and former employees to investors such as SoftBank, Dragoneer Investment Group, and Thrive Capital. Negotiations are still in their early stages, and details may change.
All three companies mentioned above are current investors in OpenAI. Sources indicate that Thrive Capital is likely to lead this funding round.
OpenAI's value has grown exponentially since the company launched its AI-generated chatbot, ChatGPT, in late 2022.
Last March, OpenAI announced a $40 billion funding round, valuing the company at $300 billion, becoming the largest privately held technology company to ever raise capital.
Earlier this month, OpenAI also announced an additional $8.3 billion in new funding from that round.
Last week, OpenAI launched GPT-5, its latest and most advanced large-scale AI model. OpenAI says GPT-5 is much smarter, faster, and more useful, especially in areas such as writing, programming, and healthcare.
However, the deployment of GPT-5 encountered some obstacles, with some users complaining about losing access to previous OpenAI models.
