In a blog post, OpenAI announced the launch of its first AI model capable of reasoning. The new Open o1 model is designed to spend more time calculating answers before responding to user queries. With this model, OpenAI's tools will be able to solve multi-step problems, including complex mathematical and coding tasks.

Although the new AI model still lacks many features that would make ChatGPT as useful as a web browser for finding information and uploading files and images, it represents a significant advancement for complex reasoning tasks and demonstrates a new level of AI capability. OpenAI says it is resetting the counter to 1 and naming it OpenAI o1.
This model is currently available through ChatGPT, for Plus users and paid teams.
The new AI model is being launched amidst increasingly fierce competition in the race to develop more sophisticated artificial intelligence systems. Besides OpenAI, Anthropic and Google have also been touting reasoning skills with their advanced AI models.
The experience using OpenAI's updated AI system will be slightly different from what users expect. Before responding to a user prompt, the new software will pause for a few seconds. Then, it will consider several related prompts and summarize what seems to be the best response. This will help O1 provide a more accurate and insightful answer.
According to the report, the company trained a model by rewarding it for each correct step in the process of arriving at the answer to a problem, rather than just rewarding it for producing a correct answer.
