France's defeat in Chad not only further pushes the country out of Africa but also significantly damages the EU's role, influence, and standing in Africa.
The Chadian government stated that it was only ending military cooperation with France, not severing ties with France like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. However, in reality, this move aimed to free the country from all ties and historical roots with France in order to "exercise full sovereignty and to reorient and restructure strategic partnerships." Chad's underlying message was that "a complete break with France is necessary to open up and enter a new era."
This setback is evidence of the failure of both Paris and the EU in their policies toward Chad in particular, and the EU in general. France and the EU have lost yet another crucial outpost in their game of influence and geostrategic position in West Africa and Africa.
For the EU, France's defeat in Chad is particularly damaging and even dangerous in two respects. Firstly, Chad currently has millions of refugees and migrants attempting to cross the Middle East and reach Europe. Without military cooperation with Chad, France and the EU will face significantly more difficulties and complications due to the refugee and migration issues. Secondly, the loss of France and the EU would give external partners, especially Russia, Turkey, and the UAE, an advantage in conquering Chad and Africa. This would be a double blow for France and the EU in Africa!
