Immediately after receiving information about 3 outbreaks of cutaneous anthrax in some localities of Dien Bien province, on June 2, the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health sent an official dispatch requesting the Director of the Department of Health of Dien Bien province to direct units in the area to urgently implement measures to prevent this dangerous disease.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Health recommends closely monitoring the health status of those involved in slaughtering and using the same source of buffalo and beef as infected cases and those in close contact with infected cases to prevent and treat them promptly; strengthen monitoring and early detection of suspected cases of anthrax; handle the environment in the outbreak area according to regulations. Strengthen coordination with veterinary agencies and relevant departments and sectors in monitoring and detecting anthrax in animals to have timely preventive measures in humans; coordinate in investigating and handling anthrax outbreaks in animals.

A case of anthrax

Strengthen communication on measures to prevent anthrax transmission from animals to humans, paying special attention to high-risk areas and those who raise, trade and slaughter cattle. Advise people not to slaughter and use food from sick and dead cattle, horses or horses of unknown origin.

For medical examination and treatment facilities, be ready to organize well the admission, isolation, and treatment of patients and promptly notify the Center for Disease Control to investigate and handle the outbreak.

Anthrax bacteria

The Ministry of Health also requested the Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to direct, guide and support localities in investigating, monitoring and tracking suspected cases and close contacts of infected cases; handling outbreaks according to regulations. Instruct and support localities in confirming tests of samples from suspected cases in humans.

According to the Dien Bien Provincial Center for Disease Control, from May 5 to May 30, Tua Chua district recorded 3 outbreaks of cutaneous anthrax with 13 cases and no deaths. All cases had an epidemiological history related to the slaughter and consumption of buffalo and cow meat.

Anthrax is an infectious disease commonly found in livestock, wild animals and humans. The cause of anthrax is the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which has the ability to produce spores, also known as spores, which are the main agent leading to anthrax. Spores of Bacillus anthracis bacteria can survive for a long time and are very resilient in the natural environment, are heat-resistant and resistant to some disinfectants. People who come into contact with animals, infected animal products, wounds, or inhale the bacteria that cause the disease will get anthrax. Symptoms of anthrax include: blisters, ulcers on the skin; some people experience headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and body aches.
