Treasure discovered in ancient Silla princess's tomb.

Hundreds of exquisite burial artifacts unearthed from the tomb of a Silla princess in South Korea have astonished archaeologists, revealing the extent of ancient civilization.

Silla was a kingdom founded by Park Hyeokgeose in 57 BC and ruled by the Gyeongju Gim dynasty for 586 years, Miryang Bak for 232 years, and Wolseong Seok for 172 years, until the fall of the Silla kingdom in 935 AD under the reign of the Gyeongsun rulers. Photo: @NRICH.

Recently, during excavations at Tomb No. 44 in the coastal city of Gyeongju, Gyeongsang Province, South Korea—the former capital of the Silla kingdom—experts from the National Research Institute for Cultural Heritage (NRICH) discovered numerous unique archaeological complexes of great historical value. Specifically, the team identified a tomb inside a burial mound containing a wooden chamber filled with stones, which no longer contained human remains as they had decayed into dust over time. Archaeologists believe this tomb dates back to the 5th century AD. Photo: @NRICH.

Also inside this burial mound, experts found a gilded bronze crown, gold breastplate, gold earrings and pendants, gilded bronze ornaments, gold and silver bracelets, an ornate silver knife, and hundreds of stones from the strategic board game Baduk (also known as Go), along with 50 different pieces of mica minerals. An expert from the National Research Institute for Cultural Heritage of Korea (NRICH) told the Korea Times: “The estimated height of the deceased is about 150 cm, and the small size of the gilded bronze crown and other jewelry accessories suggest that this tomb belongs to a woman.” Photo: @NRICH.

The burial mound also contained many gold-plated beetle-shaped artifacts used to decorate the deceased. Beetles are typically only found in the royal burial grounds of the ancient Silla kingdom, so it is highly likely that the woman buried in this tomb was a princess of the ancient Silla kingdom.
