Wood processing is one of the key industries in the province's industrial development. The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the increasingly stringent demands of the global market regarding quality, safety, environmental friendliness, and product origin are forcing wood production and processing activities to adapt.

The province has approximately 200 enterprises and cooperatives, over 700 wood processing facilities, and about 2,000 household-scale wood processing businesses. The diverse range of wood products includes raw materials and finished products such as wood chips, veneer, sawn timber, lumber, wood pellets, compressed wood fuel, MDF boards, HDF boards, and household furniture. These wood products are consumed domestically and exported to markets in the United States, China, Japan, and South Korea.
While the number of wood processing facilities is relatively large, they are mostly small-scale. Cooperation and linkages between businesses, processing facilities, and forest growers are not strong; the proportion of unprocessed and raw products is high, resulting in low value. Currently, consumer demands, especially in international markets, for wood products are increasing. Strict regulations on environmental protection and sustainable development are being imposed by major buyers and developed economies . Businesses must adapt to meet these standards, from using sustainably managed wood to adopting environmentally friendly production processes.
Faced with changing market conditions, businesses are compelled to innovate technologically, form production linkages, plan investments, improve quality, and enhance competitiveness domestically and internationally. Working alongside businesses, the province regularly monitors and addresses obstacles and issues related to key industries, including the wood industry, to increase production value. The province promotes industrial development; focusing on attracting businesses with strong potential to invest in deep processing, in line with the raw material area plan. It encourages large-scale individual businesses to convert and upgrade to corporate entities to facilitate expansion of scale, scope of operations, and consumer markets.
With over 12,000 hectares of production forest land, Doan Hung district has great potential for developing the wood processing industry linked to raw material sources. The district has nearly 50 enterprises and hundreds of wood processing and manufacturing facilities. Mr. Vu Trong Khai, Head of the District's Economic and Infrastructure Department, stated: “Wood processing is a strong industry for the district. We encourage production facilities to invest in technological innovation towards deep and sustainable processing, and to build product brands. We promptly implement industrial promotion and trade promotion programs to support businesses and rural industrial establishments in investing in modern machinery and equipment, improving production capacity and increasing the competitiveness of products in the market. At the same time, we actively disseminate information directly to facilities regarding compliance with legal regulations and labor safety in the field of forest product processing, contributing to sustainable development.”
According to Plan No. 3915/KH-UBND dated September 19, 2024, of the Provincial People's Committee on the implementation of the restructuring project of the Industry and Trade sector in the province until 2030, the tasks and solutions for the wood processing industry include organizing afforestation, transforming large timber forests, and sustainably managing forests in conjunction with enterprises processing wood products for export; encouraging wood processing enterprises to participate in afforestation and developing local raw material areas; rationally locating factories by region, prioritizing the construction of factories in mountainous areas; developing support services for the industry; and investing in the development of supporting industries for the processing and production of wood products.
Implementing these solutions in a coordinated manner will contribute to promoting the sustainable and efficient development of the wood processing industry, along the value chain from forest planting, harvesting, processing to product consumption, helping businesses to have sufficient technological and environmental capabilities to participate in domestic and international market integration.
