On March 2nd, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital announced that it had successfully performed emergency surgery on a 4-month-old patient, NTO, residing in Yen Trung commune, Nghe An province, who suffered from a severe, life-threatening congenital heart defect.

Timely surgery saves 4-month-old baby with rare congenital heart defect.
Previously, on January 16th, the child was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe respiratory failure, cyanosis throughout the body, weighing only 4kg, requiring mechanical ventilation and vasopressor medication due to severe pneumonia.
Through examination and in-depth tests, doctors discovered that the child had total pulmonary venous return anomaly with obstruction of the heart, a rare and particularly dangerous congenital heart defect.
According to doctors, in this condition, oxygen-rich blood from the lungs does not return to the left atrium as normal, but instead flows into the systemic venous system and into the right atrium, causing blood mixing, severe oxygen deficiency, and increased pulmonary artery pressure. Without timely surgery, children are at high risk of acute heart failure and death.
Given the critical condition, the hospital held a comprehensive consultation and decided on emergency surgery. After more than 6 hours, the cardiovascular surgery team successfully corrected the heart defect for the child.
After surgery, the child received intensive care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for 20 days with specialized resuscitation measures such as mechanical ventilation, antibiotics, vasopressors, blood transfusions, and intensive nutritional support.
The child is now alert, breathing independently, feeding well, has a stable cardiovascular condition, and has been discharged from the hospital.
