"Rabbit!!" sprints forward
When Tran Thanh and Truong Giang both chose Tet 2026 as the release date for their films "Tho Oi!!" and "Nha Ba Toi Mot Phong ," many predicted a two-horse race between the two most popular stars in the market. However, the actual events show that the balance has tipped heavily in Tran Thanh's favor.
After 6 days of release, "Rabbit, Oh My!!" has grossed over 250 billion VND. According to data from Box Office Vietnam, in the past weekend alone, the film earned over 123 billion VND, selling over 1.2 million tickets across more than 12,000 screenings, almost dominating the box office.
"Rabbit, Oh My Rabbit!" , directed by Tran Thanh, revolves around seemingly peaceful relationships that hide deep-seated hurt, deception, and conflict. The film features a cast including LyLy, Phao, Vinh Dam, Van Mai Huong, and Quoc Anh, each character wearing a unique emotional "mask," forced to confront the truth and hidden aspects of themselves.
In second place, "My Dad's House, One Studio" grossed over 81 billion VND by noon on February 23rd. Over the weekend, the film reached over 41 billion VND with more than 412,000 tickets sold. Although still quite far behind "Rabbit, Oh My!" , this figure is considered stable.
The film revolves around Mr. Thach (played by Truong Giang), a man who makes pickled eggplant to support his daughter through high school. Tragedy strikes when he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and secrets about his ex-wife gradually come to light. However, the film has been criticized for its outdated approach to family themes, with many contrived and unnecessarily drawn-out situations.
The cast's performances also sparked debate, with Truong Giang continuing his familiar image of a hardworking father, Miss Nhu Van being criticized for her stiff dialogue, and Anh Tu ATUS bringing his image from reality shows into the film, resulting in a lack of harmony with his character.
The race also includes "Heavenly Treasure" with 50 billion VND after 6 days, earning over 28 billion VND on the weekend alone with more than 262,000 tickets sold. "The Scent of Pho" is temporarily at the bottom of the Tet film group with 30 billion VND, achieving over 14 billion VND on the weekend alone with more than 140,000 tickets sold, showing limited appeal despite exploiting familiar material about traditional Vietnamese food.

Early breakups
In contrast to the vibrant atmosphere at the top, the 2026 Lunar New Year film season also witnessed cases of films leaving theaters early due to low box office revenue.
The film "Huyen Tinh Da Trach" officially stopped showing on February 23rd. According to Box Office Vietnam, on February 22nd, the film only had 7 screenings, selling 282 tickets and earning approximately 27 million VND; the day before, it had 5 screenings, selling 295 tickets and earning 32 million VND. The total box office revenue after leaving theaters was only 425 million VND, more than 500 times lower than "Tho Oi!!" (251 billion VND). The film is among the biggest losers of 2026, alongside "Chien Nam: Ve Sau Thoat Xac" (324 million VND) and "Van Dam Yeu Em " (85 million VND).
Film critic Nguyen Phong Viet believes that the release timing was one of the main reasons. The film was released before the official holiday, a period when audiences are less likely to go to the movies due to busy schedules. In the context of the fiercely competitive Tet holiday season, a poor start almost certainly means losing the opportunity.
He also noted that "Huyen Tinh Da Trach" has a historical and mythical feel, a distinctly Northern Vietnamese style, and lacks a "box office draw" star, making it difficult to compete with comedy and family films. He suggested that if it were released in March or April – when the market is less pressured by blockbusters – its revenue might be more promising.
The box office picture for Tet 2026 shows that Vietnamese audiences are still willing to spend heavily on domestic films. However, the intense competition also places higher demands on scripts, content depth, and storytelling. In a fiercely competitive film season, only works capable of captivating audiences can survive and thrive.
