Parents suspect that the chicken served in school lunches may contain maggots or fly larvae.
Parents of third-grade students at Ph.Th. Elementary School are discussing issues in the class group chat.
While the controversy surrounding a company providing school lunch services to Phu Huu Primary School in Thu Duc City (Ho Chi Minh City) being accused of storing spoiled food in its freezer has not yet subsided, further complaints from parents about other school lunch providers have emerged.
Specifically, last night, October 27th, Mr. Han (name changed), a parent whose daughter is in 3rd grade at Ph. Th. Primary School in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, told a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper that on the afternoon of October 27th, while his family was cooking dinner, someone on the class's parent group Zalo messaged him saying they didn't know if his daughter's lunch at school contained maggots or fly larvae. That parent also called his wife to ask for confirmation, as they had just heard their daughter recount the incident from school. Mr. Han panicked and asked his daughter, T., to describe the details of her school lunch, and learned that fried chicken drumsticks were served during lunchtime.
"Little T. said that she had only taken one bite when she discovered something black and alive inside, its head wiggling, so she threw it away and ate her rice with soup. She also said that from now on she would never dare to eat chicken thighs at school again. I repeatedly asked her to tell the truth, understanding her personality, and with a father's intuition, I knew she was telling the truth," Mr. Han recounted.
Mr. Han said that after talking to his daughter, even though it was past 6 PM on October 27th, he still took her to the school to directly report the incident to the school and request that a report be filed. Upon arriving at the school, he learned that a large number of parents, including representatives from the school's parent-teacher association, were meeting with the school's management and a representative from the company providing the school's lunch program.
Many parents inquired about the catering service provider for the school's lunch program.
On the evening of October 27th, when Mr. Han arrived at the school, a meeting was underway involving the school's management board, representatives of the parents' association, and representatives of the school lunch provider.
Mr. Han waited until 6:30 PM to directly question the school administration about his daughter's lunch, specifically regarding his suspicion that there were maggots or larvae in the chicken thigh she ate that day, and requested to review the security camera footage. The school provided him with the footage, but it was from a distance, only showing a wide shot of the students; when zoomed in on the food tray, the image became blurry.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Han raised concerns about the origin of food products, documentation, invoices, and how meat is stored, questioning whether insects like fly larvae or maggots could be present in the food.
Coincidence regarding the school meal provider.
Mr. Han stated that he was previously unaware of which unit was providing school lunches for his child's school. However, two days ago, the incident involving PAVL, the unit providing school lunches to Phu Huu Primary School in Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City, caused a public uproar when a video clip surfaced showing the unit storing spoiled food such as chicken feet and sausages in a freezer in the kitchen. The director of this catering unit also submitted an explanation to the schools they supply meals to.
"That's when I found out that PAVL, the company that provides meals at Phu Huu Primary School, is also providing lunch for my child's school," Mr. Han said.
"According to the class representatives who attended the entire meeting between the school and the meal provider PAVL on the evening of October 27th, the school has not yet finalized whether to continue using the boarding school meal provider or stop," the parent added.
Images filmed by parents inside the kitchen of PAVL, a company that provides school lunch services to many schools, show foul-smelling, mushy chicken feet stored in the freezer along with other food items intended for students.
PAVL Co., Ltd. has been providing school lunch services to many schools in Thu Duc City for many years. Phu Huu Primary School in Phu Huu Ward terminated its contract with this company on October 26, 2023.
Reporters from Thanh Nien Newspaper have repeatedly contacted the legal representatives of the company providing school lunch services for an official response regarding food safety and hygiene issues, but have not yet received a reply. Reporters are currently contacting the Principal of Ph.Th. Primary School in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, and will continue to provide updates...
