Regarding the incident where plaster from the classroom ceiling at Nguyen Trung Truc Primary and Secondary School fell during class, causing panic among students, on March 3rd, according to information from the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City ( Kien Giang province), a report on the current state of the building and a plan for handling the situation has been submitted.
Nguyen Trung Truc Primary and Secondary School was built and put into operation in the 2021-2022 school year.
Earlier, at around 9:25 AM on February 25th, during music class, students in class 8/4 of Nguyen Trung Truc Primary and Secondary School were startled when a section of plaster from the ceiling of the music classroom fell. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Immediately after the incident occurred, the school's leadership reported it to the relevant authorities for appropriate action; at the same time, they instructed the music teacher to move the students to another classroom for lessons.
Immediately after the incident of plaster falling from the ceiling during class time, workers were dispatched to fix it.
Upon receiving the information, the leaders of Phu Quoc City People's Committee directed the Urban Management Department to take the lead, in coordination with relevant agencies and Nguyen Trung Truc Primary and Secondary School, to conduct an inspection and report urgently to the City People's Committee.
On the afternoon of February 26th, relevant authorities visited the school to inspect the ceilings of all classrooms, functional rooms, corridors, etc.
Surveys of the current situation reveal that the plaster layers on the classroom and hallway ceilings are falling off primarily due to the plaster not adhering to the concrete floor surface (the concrete floor surface is very smooth due to the use of film-faced plywood formwork). Another cause is uneven thermal expansion between the concrete roof slab and the ceiling plaster layer, leading to delamination.
Previously, plaster from the ceiling of the hallway in building A of the school also fell down.
The falling plaster from the ceiling is the exterior surface finish and does not affect the building's main load-bearing structure. However, this poses a safety risk and negatively impacts the morale of teachers and students during the learning and teaching process.
Surveys have revealed several other locations where similar ceiling plaster could fall. To ensure proper adhesion of the ceiling plaster to the concrete floor, the concrete floor surface must be sanded and cleaned before plastering, potentially affecting learning and teaching activities.
To remedy the situation, the relevant authorities proposed scraping off the poorly adhering plaster from the ceiling, cleaning, and repainting all the surveyed and documented areas.
Nguyen Trung Truc Primary and Secondary School (Duong Dong Ward, Phu Quoc City) was built and put into use in the 2021-2022 school year with 30 classrooms, 6 subject-specific classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, and several other functional rooms. According to information from the school, recently, some ceiling plaster has fallen in some rooms (multi-purpose hall, assembly hall, hallway). Fortunately, these incidents did not cause any injuries.
