Podolski has retired. |
Podolski posted the announcement on his personal page on May 23rd. Gornik Zabrze's home match against Radomiak Radom this weekend will be the German striker's last appearance as a player.
The decision to retire from football came as little surprise, as just two days earlier, Podolski had officially become the owner of the Polish club he had been with since 2021.
In his farewell video , Podolski placed the jerseys of all the clubs he had played for on a table before ending with his familiar and humorous remark: "That's the end of another workday." Gornik Zabrze also paid tribute to the club legend: "Thank you for everything, Poldi, and good luck on your new journey."
Podolski rose through the ranks of Cologne's youth academy before making a name for himself in the Bundesliga. He played for Bayern Munich and won the domestic double in 2008. For the German national team, Podolski made 130 appearances and scored 49 goals, a record only surpassed by Miroslav Klose and Gerd Muller in the national team's history.
Besides Germany, this left-footed striker also played for Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Vissel Kobe, and Antalyaspor. Before retiring, he managed to achieve his final goal by helping Gornik Zabrze win the Polish domestic cup, thus becoming a national champion in five different leagues.
