PSG have reached the Champions League final. |
Following their victory over Arsenal, PSG have reached the Champions League final for the second time. Their opponent will be Inter Milan. Prior to this, the Parc des Princes side won Ligue 1 and secured a place in the French Cup final against Reims on May 25th.
PSG has the opportunity to become the 10th European club to win the treble: the national league title, the national cup, and the Champions League. Previously, only Celtic, Ajax, PSV, Man Utd, Barcelona (twice), Inter, Bayern Munich (twice), and most recently, Man City have achieved this feat. Notably, one of Barcelona's two trebles was won under coach Luis Enrique.
PSG's journey in this season's Champions League is quite unique, as they defeated four Premier League opponents: Man City (League Phase), Liverpool (round of 16), Aston Villa (quarter-finals), and Arsenal (semi-finals).
This season's Champions League final will take place in the early hours of June 1st at the Allianz Arena. Historical statistics favor PSG. Previously, every Champions League/European Cup final played at Bayern's home ground has seen a new team lift the trophy, namely Nottingham Forest (1979), Marseille (1993), Borussia Dortmund (1997), and Chelsea (2012).
"Luis Enrique creates extraordinary things. I can't think of any team that could transform itself in such a short time as PSG. Today, I want to praise Gianluigi Donnarumma. He performed at the highest level. PSG deserved to reach the final," commented former player Owen Hargreaves.
Sharing the same sentiment, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: "Congratulations to PSG. Donnarumma was the best player in both legs. He made the difference. I am proud of what my players have shown."
