Sweet fruits on the journey of building the rice brand of Lak district

On April 9, 2025, the trademark “Lak District Rice” was granted a certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property. This is an important start for the locality to take the next steps to “legitimately” bring the Lak District rice brand to the market.

In Lak district, there are currently 3 cooperatives producing rice according to VietGAP, with a total area of ​​about 154 hectares and have been granted certificates, including: Tuan Nguyen Cooperative for Plant Seed Production, Distribution and Agricultural Services, with a total area of ​​33 hectares, with 29 participating households; Thien Phu Cooperative for Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Production, Trade and Services, with a total area of ​​40 hectares, with 16 participating households; Thai Hai Cooperative for Agricultural and Fishery Production and Services, with a total area of ​​81 hectares, with 34 participating households.

In order to build a local rice brand, in recent years, Lak district has always accompanied businesses and farmers, providing financial support for implementing production linkage models. For example, it has provided more than 4.5 billion VND in funding for Thai Hai Agricultural and Fishery Production and Service Cooperative to implement the Project of Building a large-scale rice field model in the direction of value chain linkage.

Accordingly, the Cooperative has planned the production area, implemented a large-scale field model of value chain production, with an area of ​​200 hectares per year and 124 participating households, with a total linked output of 3,780 tons of various types of rice sold to the market. By the end of 2024, the Cooperative had 81 hectares certified by VietGAP, and the Cooperative has successfully protected the brand of Thai Hai clean rice products to achieve 3-star OCOP products.

Lak district has strengths in wet rice production, with a total annual rice cultivation area of ​​about 15,000 hectares, the total rice output in the last 2 years (2023 - 2024) of Lak district reached from 91,000 - 95,000 tons, main rice varieties such as Dai Thom 8, RVT, ST24, ST25...

Lak District People's Committee said that the district has 29 cooperatives, of which 17 operate in the agricultural sector. In recent years, agricultural cooperatives have developed in both quantity and quality, diversified operating models, and provided services associated with the value chain. The use of spraying aircraft, drip irrigation technology, and agricultural product drying technology has been actively applied by cooperatives in production and processing activities, bringing high productivity, output, and economic value.

Along with activities to support businesses and farmers, the investment in building intra-field roads to facilitate travel, production and transportation of agricultural products in general and rice in particular is of interest to local authorities at all levels. Every year, from various sources of capital, many intra-field roads have been renovated, maintained and repaired.

For example, in 2022, from the provincial and district budgets, the main road for intra-field traffic in the rice field of Buon Tung 1 village, Buon Triet commune was invested in construction, with a total investment of 2.5 billion VND; the main road for intra-field traffic in the rice field of Dong Giang village, Buon Tria commune, with a total investment of more than 1.9 billion VND. From the state budget capital for non-public investment, in 2024, 850 million VND was allocated to repair the canal of Farm 8/4 (Buon Tria commune).

In addition to the capital from the state budget, localities such as Buôn Trí and Buôn Triết communes have done a good job of mobilizing people to participate in building intra-field roads. Thanks to that, many intra-field roads have been concreted, serving well the needs of travel, transporting goods and agricultural products, and facilitating mechanization in rice production activities.

In recent years, Lak district rice has been well received by the market.

The process of building product brands and establishing rights to the Lak district rice certification mark is also regularly led by the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee, urging specialized agencies to coordinate with communes and towns to implement. On February 28, 2022, the Lak District Party Committee issued a specialized resolution on the orientation of building rice brands (Resolution No. 09-NQ/HU).

Based on Resolution 09, the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee has led and directed the grassroots party organizations under its management based on the functions and tasks of the locality and unit to develop and implement plans in accordance with reality. Accordingly, it has organized surveys, collected products and prepared documents to build regulations for the brand; designed logos; built barcodes to register with the Intellectual Property Office, designed labels; designed rice packaging samples; built maps to delimit products for registering certification trademarks...

Sharing the joy when Lak district rice was granted a certificate of registration for its own brand, Standing Vice Chairman of Lak District People's Committee Vo Thanh Hue affirmed that this certificate will be an important legal basis for cooperatives and farming households producing and trading rice in the district to have the right to use the brand and trade in local specialty products.

In the coming time, the locality will focus on promoting the linkage of rice production and consumption; building a specific capital support mechanism for cooperatives. In addition, increasing investment in infrastructure serving production, applying science and technology in selecting suitable rice varieties. Paying attention to and creating favorable conditions in terms of land mechanisms and policies to attract investors to build rice processing factories in the district, contributing to increasing production efficiency and improving rice quality. At the same time, bringing rice products to supermarkets and convenience stores, contributing to enhancing the value and competitiveness of Lak district rice products in the market.
