The Yomiuri newspaper, citing an anonymous government source, reported that although Tokyo already has geostationary satellite communications access, Starlink technology, operated by SpaceX, will be an addition to the existing satellite network.
Countries around the world are seeking to build resilient and flexible communication networks to counter the risks of interference or satellite attacks in conflict scenarios.
According to a Japanese newspaper, the country's Self-Defense Forces have been testing Starlink since March, with the system deployed in approximately 10 locations, as well as for military training.
Starlink technology is being widely used in Ukraine on the battlefield and is a target for Russian interference. Last October, Elon Musk said that SpaceX could not afford to indefinitely finance the use of Starlink in the European country.
In response, the US Department of Defense immediately signed a contract earlier this month for Starlink satellite services to be used in Ukraine.
“We will continue to work with global partners to ensure Ukraine has the communications and satellite networks it needs. Satellite communications are a critical component of Kyiv’s overall communications network, which is why the Pentagon decided to contract with SpaceX,” the U.S. Department of Defense said in a statement.
