Quang Ngai impressively reduces poverty, from 9% to 2.5%

TPO - After more than 4 years, the poverty rate in Quang Ngai province has decreased from 9% to 2.5%. This achievement is a testament to the change in people's lives, especially in remote areas.

Everywhere is flourishing

In recent times, together with the National Target Programs on New Rural Construction, the Socio -Economic Development Program for Ethnic Minority Areas, the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction has contributed to creating positive changes in socio-economic development, improving the living conditions of the poor, especially in mountainous areas and ethnic minority areas in Quang Ngai province.

In the 2021-2025 period, the total resources mobilized to implement the National Target Programs in Quang Ngai reached more than 7,000 billion VND. Beneficiary localities have implemented 98 infrastructure projects, 260 projects to diversify livelihoods, support production, and improve nutrition. Housing support has been provided to over 3,900 poor and near-poor households. Over 800 poor workers have been connected to jobs and over 400 people have gone to work abroad under contracts.

Mountainous infrastructure is invested synchronously and spaciously.

Thanks to that, people's lives have gradually improved, and ethnic minority areas in the province have seen many improvements. The rate of poor households according to the multidimensional poverty standard in the whole province has decreased steadily over the years, an average decrease of 1.76%/year, exceeding the target assigned by the Central Government by 0.26%. The rate of poor households among ethnic minorities has decreased by an average of 6.42%/year; in poor districts, this rate has decreased by an average of 9.25%/year, exceeding the target assigned by the Central Government by 4.75%.

With support from the State, Mr. Le Hong Ngoc's family (Mo Duc town, Mo Duc district) boldly invested and borrowed more capital to grow many types of fruit trees, develop the family economy, and escape poverty. "After the economy gradually stabilized and I overcame difficulties, I voluntarily wrote an application to withdraw from the poor household status," Mr. Ngoc shared.

The national target program on sustainable poverty reduction has contributed to creating positive changes in the socio-economic development of Quang Ngai.

Vice Chairman of Son Tay District People's Committee Dinh Truong Giang said that the implementation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction has helped people escape poverty. "The district's approach is to go to every alley, knock on every door, and mobilize each target group. Increase support for production support projects to provide seedlings directly to people. Assign staff to go directly to households to guide them on how to have a source of income," Mr. Giang shared.

In addition, the lives of the poor have improved significantly, and infrastructure in ethnic minority and mountainous areas has received significant investment. Roads, schools, medical stations, electricity, water, etc. have been invested synchronously.

Support livelihoods linked to value chains, transforming models to adapt to climate change.

“The rural roads from the hamlet to the commune center have been concreted. National electricity and solar lighting systems have been fully invested. People are very excited,” said Mr. Le Van Bao (residing in Long Hiep commune, Minh Long district).

According to statistics, the poverty rate of the whole province in the period of 2021-2025 has decreased from 9% to 2.5% by the end of 2025. Currently, the whole province still has 5 mountainous districts receiving the central budget, there are still many poor households, an average annual decrease of 1.76% of poor households, exceeding the central target by 0.26%.

The poverty rate in the districts at the beginning of the period is expected to decrease from 43% to 6.84% by the end of 2025. The quality of life of the poor has improved, infrastructure has been invested in and developed. Many production models, livelihood support, and job creation in mountainous districts have been effectively implemented.

Need a set of New Rural Criteria for the period 2026-2030

However, poverty reduction work still faces some difficulties. Some mountainous districts and ethnic minority areas still have high poverty rates, and the quality of poverty reduction is not truly sustainable. Resource integration and project implementation effectiveness are uneven.

Spiritual life of ethnic minorities and mountainous areas is improved.

In order to effectively implement national target programs, including the Sustainable Poverty Reduction Program, recently, at the National Conference summarizing national target programs for the 2021-2025 period and the movements "The whole country joins hands to build new rural areas", "For the poor - No one is left behind", Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province Nguyen Hoang Giang proposed that the Government and central ministries and branches soon issue a set of New Rural Criteria for the 2026-2030 period in line with reality, with clear zoning between mountainous, plain and coastal areas to avoid putting too much pressure on disadvantaged communes.

At the same time, it is necessary to issue guidelines to review and determine the level of achievement of new rural and advanced new rural standards for communes after the merger. Mr. Giang also recommended perfecting the poverty reduction policy for the 2026-2030 period according to deprivation indicators, including issuing new poverty standards associated with indicators that the policy can directly impact.
