Rice Sprinkle Spices That Help You Lose Weight
By simply adding a “homemade” spice to his meals, Japanese doctor Takashi Tsuchida successfully lost 31kg, from 88kg to 57kg, maintaining a healthy, stable body for many years.
Dr. Takashi Tsuchida, a Japanese neurosurgeon, used to have a busy work schedule and was often under stress, leading to uncontrolled eating.

There was even a time when he ate three fast food meals a day and drank a bottle of whiskey in just a few days. As a result, his weight skyrocketed to 88kg, his BMI was 33, and his blood pressure and cholesterol levels were far above the safe threshold. As a doctor, he understood better than anyone that his health was in great danger.
Determined to change to save himself, Dr. Takashi tried many different diets, from low-carb to vegetarian, but all failed because the weight was easy to gain back. He realized that the key to losing weight is not to cut down too much, but to find a long-term method to maintain, ensuring adequate nutrition.
Dr. Takashi identified three key factors: eating enough protein to protect muscles, controlling sugar intake, and improving metabolism. Thanks to reasonable adjustments, he successfully lost weight, returning to a healthy 57kg.
Notably, he shared a secret that effectively supports his weight loss journey: a "homemade" rice seasoning called furikake for weight loss.
This furikake dish consists of tofu, shiitake mushrooms, bonito flakes, a little chili powder and seaweed, mixed together, ground and dried. He often sprinkles it on rice, adds it to soups, noodles or rice balls.
According to Dr. Takashi, each furikake ingredient plays a scientific role:
- Tofu is rich in vegetable protein, which helps maintain muscle mass and limit muscle loss when losing weight. Research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that a high-protein diet can increase fat loss by 25% compared to a low-protein diet.
- Shiitake mushrooms contain many B vitamins, especially niacin and riboflavin, which support carbohydrate and fat metabolism. A report from the National Institute of Nutrition of Japan shows that mushrooms help improve metabolic function and reduce the risk of dyslipidemia.
- Capsaicin in chili has been proven by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to stimulate brown fat cells. This is a type of cell that specializes in burning energy, contributing to effective weight loss.
A study published in Appetite shows that capsaicin also helps reduce appetite, increases thermogenesis in the body, and burns more calories.
- Histamine from tuna scales helps inhibit the brain's appetite center, reducing hunger. A study by Kyushu University (Japan) published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation confirmed that histamine plays a role in regulating appetite and food intake.
Dr. Takashi shared: “Just sprinkle furikake on white rice, a simple dish but makes me feel full longer, limiting the feeling of snacking.”
Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly is very important.
Besides, he also encourages people to eat slowly and chew thoroughly. A small but extremely important habit to control weight.
A large-scale study at Hiroshima University on more than 60,000 Japanese people showed that fast eaters are 1.5 times more likely to be obese than slow eaters. Eating slowly not only aids better digestion but also gives the body enough time to send out “full” signals, reducing the total amount of food intake.
Experts also agree with Dr. Takashi's point of view. Sustainable weight loss does not lie in strict diets but in changing eating habits and maintaining long-term nutritional balance.
Simple, easy-to-apply solutions like Dr. Takashi's furikake can help many people control their weight safely.
However, Dr. Takashi also noted that furikake should not be considered a “miracle drug” for weight loss, but only as a supporting tool. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress control are still decisive factors in maintaining a long-term figure and health.
