Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale said he loves being a part of Arsenal, after receiving a constant boost of support following the Premier League win against Brentford.
"A feeling I never took for granted. I love being a part of this club. The fans have shown incredible passion in supporting me. Thank you," Ramsdale wrote on Instagram.
Ramsdale was signed by Arsenal for $33 million from Sheffield United in the summer of 2021 and immediately took the starting spot from then-number one goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Last season in the Premier League, he played in all 38 matches, keeping 14 clean sheets and playing a major role in helping Arsenal finish as runners-up. However, this season, the England international has lost his place to David Raya – who was loaned from Brentford with an option to buy for $35 million in the summer of 2024. Manager Mikel Arteta prefers his compatriot goalkeeper because of his good footwork.

Ramsdale hasn't played in the Premier League since the 3-1 win against Man Utd on September 3rd. Since then, he's only made two more appearances in the League Cup – a 1-0 win against Brentford in the third round and a 1-3 defeat against West Ham in the round of 16 – before returning to the Premier League last weekend because Raya wasn't allowed to play against his current club.
Sympathizing with Ramsdale, many Arsenal fans showed their support by wearing their jerseys, holding up banners, and chanting his name repeatedly. His teammates also tried to comfort him. After the match, most of them ran to celebrate with Ramsdale.
However, his limited playing time significantly impacted Ramsdale's performance. For example, in the 13th minute, he hesitated before taking the ball forward and made a misplaced pass when an opponent pressed in the penalty area. Fortunately for the 25-year-old goalkeeper, midfielder Declan Rice managed to get back in time and block Bryan Mbeumo's shot on the goal line. Ramsdale also missed a throw-in, forcing his teammates to clear the ball.
In the second half, Ramsdale played more consistently, contributing to Arsenal's clean sheet and 1-0 victory. In the post-match press conference, Arteta praised Ramsdale and refrained from criticizing his players for their mistakes. "That's football. I'm very happy with what the team showed. We kept a clean sheet and are improving. Ramsdale is very brave and has character. That's why I like him. I like how the players encourage each other," said the Spanish coach.
Arteta had previously stated he would rotate between Raya and Ramsdale. However, it seems Raya has prevailed in the competition, and recently, the English media reported that Arsenal have decided to sign Raya permanently. This has fueled rumors that Ramsdale will leave the Emirates Stadium in the January transfer window.
