Trent Alexander-Arnold out for two months with a torn thigh muscle

Real Madrid are back in a familiar situation: winning on the pitch but losing in the medical room. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had just started to find his rhythm at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao in the 19th round of La Liga on the morning of December 4, had to leave the field in the 55th minute and the MRI results confirmed the shock: a torn rectus femoris muscle, out for at least two months. A winter plan immediately collapsed.

Xabi Alonso has long been without a real right-back. Dani Carvajal is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and will only return in January, while Trent has just had his form halted. Real Madrid therefore enter December without anyone fit enough to cover the right flank, a gap that any opponent can exploit.

Trent didn’t just miss a game, he missed a crucial period of time. At San Mames, the former Liverpool man played his best game since arriving in Madrid: steady, alert, and providing the opening pass for Mbappe. But this was his second injury of the season, bringing his total absence to an alarming level: if predictions hold true, Trent will have been injured in 58% of his games since joining Real.

In that context, there is some consolation: Camavinga has only a minor ankle sprain and should be back against Manchester City. Rüdiger is also not seriously injured. But that does not mask the fact that 55% of Real’s defence is in hospital, including Carvajal, Trent, Huijsen, Alaba and Mendy.

Real Madrid will have to go through December with a patchwork squad and a tight schedule: Super Cup, Champions League and Copa del Rey. When a team loses both right-backs, the long-term race is no longer a matter of tactics, but a fight for survival.

Trent will be back in February. But will Real Madrid still be intact by then? That is the question that keeps Xabi Alonso up at night.
