Reuters reported this morning (May 29), citing sources familiar with the matter, that the US and Iranian delegations have reached an agreement to extend the ceasefire and lift all restrictions on cargo transport through the strategic Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.

The agreement is currently awaiting approval from US President Donald Trump and Iranian leaders. Reuters added that after the agreement is announced, the US and Iran will engage in further negotiations to resolve remaining points of disagreement, including Iran's nuclear program.
Neither the US nor Iran has confirmed the information. Besides Reuters, many major US media outlets have also reported that Tehran and Washington are about to announce an agreement. When asked about the negotiations with Iran, US Vice President JD Vance said: "We are very close and we will work towards achieving our goal."
Meanwhile, at a White House press conference on May 28, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that oil and gas prices could "fall very quickly." "The oil market will have a very large supply after the war ends," he added.
The US and Israel launched an offensive against Iran in late February 2026, leading Tehran to carry out a series of retaliatory attacks targeting what it believed to be linked to Washington and Tel Aviv in the Gulf states.
After six weeks of fighting, on April 8, the US and Iran reached a ceasefire agreement, but the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for global energy, remains under a double blockade imposed by both the US and Iran.
This past week, tensions showed signs of escalating when the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on May 25th that it would target Iranian missile launch sites and ships attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran accused the US of violating the ceasefire. Two days later, Tehran announced it had launched missiles toward US bases in the Middle East and warned of a "strong response" if Washington repeated any attacks on Iran.
