Roma are considering sacking Mourinho.

Italy: Following their 1-3 defeat to Milan in Serie A Round 20, Roma's management is reportedly unhappy with the result, the team's performance, and is considering sacking coach Jose Mourinho.

Roma have failed to win in their last three matches, losing 0-1 to city rivals Lazio in the Italian Cup quarter-finals, drawing 1-1 with Atalanta, and losing 1-3 to Milan in Serie A. They have dropped to ninth place in Serie A with 29 points, five points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina.

The Italian capital club has reached the Europa League play-offs and still has hopes of competing for a top-four finish in Serie A, but according to Sportmediaset , the management is unhappy with the team's performance and results. Roma's leaders are also dissatisfied with Mourinho's inflammatory remarks towards referees and are considering the possibility of sacking "The Special One".

The Portuguese coach also seems to have lost the support of a section of Roma fans, as he was booed and criticized both before and after the defeat to Milan on January 14th.

Compared to the same period last season in Serie A, Roma have earned nine fewer points, conceded six more goals, and won three fewer matches. The Italian capital club also boasts lower expected goals (xG) figures, dropping from 1.51 per 90 minutes last season to 1.37 per 90 minutes this season.

However, Roma have a nearly identical number of attacking moves resulting in shots, averaging 22.7 per 90 minutes last season and 22.8 per 90 minutes this season. Mourinho's side also complete more passes per 90 minutes, with 372.9 last season and 428.4 from the start of the season.

According to Football Italy , the above statistics show that Roma haven't declined significantly compared to last season, but have achieved worse results due to their personnel situation. The Italian capital club is facing a wave of injuries, with Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling out long-term, and Paulo Dybala frequently experiencing problems and unable to play regularly.

In the summer of 2023, Roma signed seven players: Romelu Lukaku, Leandro Paredes, Renato Sanches, Evan Ndicka, Houssem Aouar, Rasmus Kristensen, and Sardar Azmoun. Of these, Lukaku and Ndicka were regular starters. Paredes and Kristensen appeared frequently in recent months but failed to make a significant impression. Sanches, Aouar, and Azmoun were lackluster and did not earn Mourinho's trust.

Mourinho joined Roma in the summer of 2021 on a contract until the end of the 2023-2024 season. The 60-year-old coach led Roma to win the 2021-2022 Conference League, the first European title for the team, reached the Europa League final last season, but lost 1-4 to Sevilla in a penalty shootout, and finished sixth in Serie A twice.

According to Sportmediaset , Daniele De Rossi is one of the candidates likely to replace Mourinho in the final stages of the season. The 2006 World Cup winner was one of Roberto Mancini's assistants during Italy's Euro 2021 victory. De Rossi previously managed SPAL in Serie B last season, but was sacked after 17 matches with three wins, eight losses, and six draws.
