The man paid a very high price for his mistake.

In 2017, I had been working at my old company for 9 years, with a total income including salary and bonuses of approximately 300,000 RMB/year (~1 billion VND).
As many people say, only those with good lives enjoy attending class reunions. It's true that in the past, I didn't want to attend class reunions.
Besides the busy work schedule and frequent commutes, another reason is that I feel I'm not good enough.
However, before that year's Labor Day, I accepted the class president's invitation to attend the reunion. I felt that my life was now good enough for me to share with everyone.
Speaking about my job, at that time I felt I received good treatment from the company. Not only did I have a high income, but the company also provided opportunities for further learning.
However, I have one grievance regarding this job. The company forced me to change jobs, from project engineer to equipment operation and maintenance department. When I was transferred, I felt that the company didn't respect me.
However, I didn't realize that this thought would be the beginning of a series of mistakes. At that time, the company's business was declining, so the superiors had to consider laying off staff. My project engineering department was one of the units being considered for downsizing.
At the time, the bosses thought that the operations and maintenance department always went hand in hand with the company's growth. Therefore, the decision to transfer me to the new department was a way to keep me from leaving the company. Unfortunately, my vision at the time didn't recognize this problem.
At the time, I was only 31 years old and confident that with enough effort, I could achieve anything. It was this self-important mindset and dissatisfaction with the company that created this illusion. From then on, I harbored the thought that if I left my current company, I would definitely do better.

Going back to the class reunion, it was the 10th anniversary of our graduation. Unlike the complaints about class reunions online, my classmates were all over 30, married, and knew how to control their emotions and be considerate of others' feelings.
No one intentionally boasted about themselves or made fun of their classmates. However, I understood that while they appeared kind and gentle on the outside, they couldn't help but secretly compare themselves to others.
Because of my desire to prove myself, I shared information about my job and salary with many of my classmates.
In return for their compliments, I felt even more confident in myself and believed I deserved a better life.
Later, as I was going out onto the rooftop, I ran into Li Xun. After chatting for a few minutes, Li Xun told me that his family had recently opened a factory. He wanted to offer me a job there, with a salary of no less than 500,000 RMB per year (approximately 1.75 billion VND).
Li Xun is a classmate with a net worth of hundreds of millions of yuan. He was my closest friend in university.
According to what he shared, after we graduated, he took over the business from his father. His father is a professor and the head of many leading scientific research projects nationwide.
Throughout our four years of university, Li Xun and I visited his father's research institute many times. Their family had a very close network of connections in Nanjing. His great-grandfather was the director of a large hospital, and his uncle was a retired military officer.
Having such a wonderful classmate as Li Xun made me very excited when he invited me to collaborate on his project. However, since I've been working for over 10 years, I couldn't immediately accept his offer.
Seeing my hesitation, after the party, he took me on a tour of the factory, which further increased my trust in Li Xun. Furthermore, my growing dissatisfaction with my current company led me to accept Li Xun's offer to work for him.

However, the price I paid was too high. Just one month after starting at the new company, my situation suddenly changed. First, due to land reclamation policies, the factory had to relocate its production facility. Then, because the company's suppliers increased prices, the profit margin decreased. After only two months at the new company, I became unemployed and didn't even receive my full salary.
And in my attempt to climb the corporate ladder at the new company, I completely resigned from my old company. Because of this, even if I were to ask to return to my old company now, the management wouldn't accept me.
I went from having a job that paid 300,000 RMB/year to being unemployed for a year. Now, when looking for work, because I'm over 30, job opportunities are limited. I've only found jobs paying 5,000 RMB/month (approximately 17.5 million VND), while still burdened with mortgage debt and a family to support.
When I think about the past, I always blame myself for being like a frog in a well. I only wanted to increase my own value without looking at the reality around me. When life is going well, self-aggrandizement is the worst thing you can do. When you become complacent and think that glory and wealth are within your reach, danger is not far away.
