The source added that Samsung is considering diversifying its OLED supply chain for its flagship products. BOE is considered its strongest competitor in this field, with the company planning to launch a low-cost panel in 2027.
Why Samsung chose BOE
OLED screens are one of the most expensive components to manufacture in smartphones, and with memory costs rising, phone manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce component costs to remain competitive.
Meanwhile, Apple has secured sufficient memory for future iPhone models thanks to long-term agreements with suppliers, giving the company a negotiating advantage. While Samsung Electronics may avoid this pressure through its own subsidiaries, its mobile division is still looking for ways to cut costs.
However, using screens manufactured by BOE in a flagship product like the Galaxy S27 could affect Samsung's brand image, so the company may need to consider this carefully. In fact, Samsung has also used OLED panels from Chinese companies, but only in its cheaper products. A prime example is the high-end mid-range smartphone Galaxy A57, which used an OLED screen from China's CSOT.
Although the proportion of display components from Samsung Display remains high, the company's supply chain has begun to diversify with the involvement of Chinese suppliers.
