Airports limit farewell hugs to three minutes.

The sign at Dunedin Airport limits hugs to three minutes.

A recent photo taken at Dunedin Airport drew attention with the caption: "Hugging time is limited to three minutes. For a more intimate farewell, please use the parking lot."

Daniel De Bono, director of Dunedin Airport, spoke about this topic in late September, suggesting that airports are "emotional hubs." He cited a study showing that a 20-second hug is enough to produce oxytocin, the "love hormone" that creates feelings of closeness and connection. Therefore, people moving quickly will allow more people to receive hugs.

Some people say the time limit for hugging is "unreasonable." However, many others agree and point out that lingering in the pick-up/drop-off area for too long can result in fines at some airports.

Before Dunedin, many airports also had regulations for farewell hugs. Nice Airport in France established a "Kiss and Fly" zone, specifically for passengers seeing off loved ones without having to get out of their cars. They only needed a hug or kiss goodbye before quickly leaving, reducing congestion and ensuring smooth traffic flow. "Kiss and Fly" zones are also found at many airports around the world , some, like Lisbon Airport in Portugal, offering free stops for up to 10 minutes.

However, since last summer, around 30% of major airports in the UK have increased their "Kiss and Fly" fees. For example, Southampton increased its fee from $4 to $7 for a 20-minute stop; Belfast increased it from $1 to nearly $4 for a 10-minute stop. Major airports like Heathrow and Gatwick charge over $6 for picking up and dropping off passengers near the terminal.
