OCOP products are a positive step, contributing to the socio -economic development of the locality. Businesses and producers of OCOP products need to pay attention to regional geography, quality, and legal procedures to expand distribution channels and bring products closer to consumers.

On the afternoon of October 3rd, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in coordination with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, organized a conference to connect OCOP (One Commune One Product) products from the Mekong Delta region with commercial systems in 2024.

Attention should be paid to the packaging design and pricing of OCOP products.

According to Mr. Ngo Truong Son, Chief of the Central Office for New Rural Development Coordination, today's event is of significant importance in connecting and cooperating in the production and promotion of OCOP products in the Mekong Delta region. In 2022, the Mekong Delta ranked third nationwide in the number of OCOP products with a rate of 17%; by 2024, the region had risen to second place with a rate of 21%. However, local OCOP product producers have not focused adequately on regional characteristics, production scale is small, production linkages are weak, and brand building thinking is still limited. Mr. Ta Minh Son, director of Tu Son Supermarket ( An Giang ), shared that OCOP products are a correct step for the locality. However, some businesses and producers have not paid attention to packaging design and have not focused on associating the geographical features of the region (such as images and characteristic colors of the province) with their products. "The fact that OCOP entities use the distinctive images and colors of their province on their products will create a geographical highlight for the region. However, attention should be paid to quality, clear legal documentation, and especially reasonable pricing to ensure consumers can confidently choose to buy," Mr. Son said.

Connecting OCOP products to supermarkets.

Mr. Pham Van Nho, director of Thanh Thanh Dried Shrimp Cooperative in Vinh Thuan district (Kien Giang province), reported that Vinh Thuan currently has over 30,000 hectares of aquaculture area, producing 40,000 tons of shrimp annually. At times, the price of freshwater prawns has dropped to 70,000 VND/kg, causing significant losses for farmers and difficulties in finding markets. "We are preparing about 50 tons of dried shrimp to supply the market for the upcoming Tet holiday. We currently need to find markets for about 40% more of our products to both support shrimp farmers and develop local specialty products," Mr. Nho suggested. Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that specialty products and OCOP products from the Mekong Delta have export potential. Businesses, OCOP entities, and local cooperatives should focus on product quality and work together to overcome difficulties and expand domestic and international markets. "The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recently visited many countries such as the US, China, and Japan to address difficulties and expand the consumption and export of OCOP products and local agricultural products abroad. Localities need to enhance consumer awareness of OCOP products to ensure sustainable development and contribute to socio-economic development," Mr. Nam emphasized.
