The landslide occurred at around 9:25 p.m. on July 13 in Khe Que village, Xuan Ai commune, Lao Cai province, killing two people and injuring three others.
According to local residents, there was no rain in the commune at the time of the incident. About 2,000 cubic meters of rock and soil suddenly collapsed into the residential area, completely burying two houses, one solidly built and one wooden.
At the house built by Mr. Vu Van H.'s family, Ms. Vu Thi T. (27 years old, Mr. H.'s wife) and her daughter Vu Khanh T. (5 years old) were inside the house when the landslide buried them.
Rescue forces arrived that night and urgently began searching. At around 0:20 a.m. on July 14, the bodies of the mother and child were found under the rocks and soil.
The remaining wooden house, about 150 square meters wide, belongs to Mr. Vu Van L's family. At the time of the landslide, there were three people in the house: Ms. Bui Thi Van A. (Mr. L's wife) and two children, Vu Minh L. (4 years old) and Vu Tu U. (1 year old). Fortunately, all three were promptly taken out by local people and authorities and are being treated at the Van Yen Regional Medical Center.
Immediately after the incident, the Xuan Ai commune authorities coordinated with the local Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue to mobilize human resources and vehicles to the scene, overcome the consequences and support the affected families.
The initial cause is believed to be weak ground, water accumulated over time causing the soil and rocks to slide, even without heavy rain.
Authorities continue to review high-risk areas to warn people and ensure safety during the flood season.
