Offline map saving is a feature that has been available on Google Maps for a long time, but Apple device users had to wait until iOS 17 to experience it on Apple's Maps app. Previously, the only way to use it was to download Google Maps to their iPhone or iPad. iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be released in mid-September, right after the iPhone 15 series launch event (expected on September 12th or 13th).

After updating the operating system, users can open Apple Maps on their phone, select Account Profile Picture > Offline Maps > Download New Map > Choose the map area to download > Download . The map area to download can be around your current location or anywhere else in the world . This map data will be saved on the device and used when the device is not connected to the internet. Users can select Apple Maps offline via Wi-Fi or cellular network (charges may apply depending on the data plan used by the carrier).

In addition to the important new feature, Apple Maps also adds new information not previously available on Google Maps. Specifically, Apple's Maps app can display information about cellular signal strength (poor or good) in the area where the user wants to download the map. There has been no official announcement regarding the source of the cellular signal quality information Apple uses. One possibility is a partnership with a telecommunications provider.

While there isn't an official iOS 17 release yet, users can still experience the features through the iOS 17 Public Beta versions released by Apple for mass testing. However, before updating, users should back up their data to avoid data loss during the installation process. Installing and using Beta versions carries the risk of errors or instability as they are only experimental.

Apple Maps first launched with iOS 6 in 2021. Initially, the app was described as "a mess" due to inaccurate information and inconsistent labeling of landmarks in many different countries. In Australia, Apple Maps was even considered "life-threatening" software because of so many errors that CEO Tim Cook had to publicly apologize and even suggest users use other map services until Apple could fix the problems.
