Natural bell-shaped peach blossoms often appear in the Mau Son mountain area, Lang Son.
To better understand the bell-shaped peach blossom, we met the researcher - Mr. Hoang Van Pao, Chairman of the Provincial Cultural Heritage Association. Receiving us over a cup of warm tea in early spring, he said: In the world, for thousands of years, Lang has always been considered the land of peach blossoms, because this place has many beautiful and precious peach varieties such as white peach, blue peach, pink peach, and that-thon peach... In particular, the bell-shaped peach is a precious peach flower that only exists in the high mountains of Mau Son. Growing and blooming in the majestic highlands, the fairy peach and bell-shaped peach symbolize the land and people of Lang: bold, elegant, and in harmony between the land and sky of the border region.
The bell-shaped peach blossom of Xứ Lạng belongs to the “bell-shaped cherry” family, also known as Taiwanese cherry. This cherry blossom variety is widely distributed from southern Japan, Taiwan island, southern China down to northern Laos, northern Vietnam. In Lang Son, this flower variety grows a lot in the Mau Son mountain area. The bell-shaped peach blossom of Xứ Lạng has its own unique features, different from the bell-shaped peach blossom of the “rhododendron” family in Bà Nà ( Đà Nẵng ) and Yên Tử (Quảng Ninh) in that although the flowers all grow in clusters hanging down like a bell, the bell-shaped peach blossom petals of the “rhododendron” family are shaped like small bells, the petals are as thin as glass with a light pink color, different from the bell-shaped peach blossom of Lang Son which belongs to the “bell-shaped cherry” family with thicker petals and clearly separated with a darker pink color, each flower usually has 5 petals, the bell-shaped peach blossom roots cling deep between the crevices of rocks.
With an extremely strong vitality, Lang Son bell peach can still sprout even when the climate in the high mountains of Mau Son drops below minus 3 degrees Celsius. On the Mau Son mountain range at an altitude of more than 1,500m, peach blossoms compete to show off their colors like bells signaling the arrival of spring, shaking in the mist, in the mountain wind, pure and beautiful. Bell peach blooms in spring, usually from January to March of the lunar calendar, when the weather is spring with mist and clouds. However, in leap years, bell peach blossoms bloom near Tet. It can be said that bell peach blossoms bloom relatively late compared to other peach blossom varieties, but perhaps because of their late bloom, bell peach blossoms have an indescribable beauty.
In Lang Son, bell-shaped peach blossoms are mainly distributed in the areas of Cong Son and Mau Son communes, Cao Loc district and some areas of Bac Xa commune, Dinh Lap district. Mr. Trieu Sang Suan - an elderly person in Cong Son commune, Cao Loc district confided: I don't know since when this peach variety has grown in Mau Son mountain area, I only know that since I was a child I saw bell-shaped peach blossoms growing in the forest, many ancient peach trees, with lush branches and leaves, show off their brilliant colors in the season, covering the entire mountainous area. Later, when the market economy developed, many people came here to exploit wild peach blossoms, including Mau Son bell-shaped peach blossoms, so now this type of peach blossom is not as abundant as before.
Because of the uniqueness of this peach variety, not only Lang Son people but also people in other provinces want to own a branch of bell peach to display on Tet holiday. Because of its rarity, a branch of bell peach is sold for 3 to 4 times higher than that of peach blossom or peach blossom. This has led to some people freely exploiting this rare wild peach variety.
Faced with the above situation, local authorities and sectors have implemented many solutions to preserve this precious bell peach variety. Specifically, in 2018, the Institute for Regional Research and Development researched and developed bell peach trees. Since its implementation, the research team has conducted experiments with 1,500 trees with the following contents: propagating bell peach trees using asexual propagation techniques by grafting and cuttings; building a propagation model with 3,500 trees propagated from seeds. After 5 years of cultivating bell peach trees, up to now, each year, the nursery implementing the project has successfully propagated about 3,000 - 4,000 bell peach seedlings. The bell peach seedlings were brought to plant and propagate in Mau Son mountain area, Cao Loc district, Loc Binh district and some communes in Dinh Lap district, thereby contributing significantly to the conservation of this precious peach variety.

Together with the functional sector, the Party Committee and local authorities of this rare peach variety have also implemented many practical solutions. Mr. Trieu Tien Truong, Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Cong Son Commune, Cao Loc District, said: In recent years, the Party Committee and local authorities have coordinated with specialized agencies to preserve ancient peach varieties in the area, including bell peach varieties. Accordingly, our area has received technology transfer, technical training, and fertilizer support from functional units. In addition, to avoid indiscriminate peach exploitation, we have actively promoted and raised awareness among local people about the protection and exploitation of peach blossoms with the right techniques, as well as replicating ancient peach and bell peach planting models in the area.
Thanks to the attention of local authorities, the ancient peach gardens in the area have been initially protected and put into tourism exploitation. Specifically, in the commune, there are currently 6 families opening tourism services to experience and take photos in ancient peach gardens.
The charm of the bell-shaped peach blossoms on Mau Son mountain range has captivated many visitors from far away and they seek every way to come here to admire and enjoy the bell-shaped peach blossoms. Mr. Nguyen Khac Minh, a tourist from Hanoi, said: Every early spring, I come to Mau Son mountain range to “hunt” for beautiful pictures of peach blossoms, especially the moment the bell-shaped peach blossoms are in full bloom.
Mr. Phan Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said: In order to develop the value of peach blossoms and create a highlight in the spring activities to attract tourists, in recent years, besides encouraging, motivating and honoring peach growers, we have made many efforts to promote the image of Lang Son peach blossoms as well as build tourism products to attract tourists to the locality through peach blossom festivals.
Accordingly, the image of bell-shaped peach blossoms is actively promoted through a number of activities in the peach blossom festival held annually such as: introducing the beauty of bell-shaped peach blossoms through cultural and artistic performances; tours to visit natural peach gardens in Mau Son mountain area, displaying bell-shaped peach blossoms at the peach blossom festival... In addition, the Provincial Tourism Promotion Center has created videos; printed and released thousands of promotional publications on tourism, integrating the promotion of the beauty of Lang peach blossoms, including the beauty of bell-shaped peach blossoms.
A new year has come, the bell-shaped peach blossoms are like a signal of a new, full spring. The preserved and promoted bell-shaped peach trees not only gradually create a good impression in the hearts of visitors from afar with their unique and impressive beauty, but also contribute significantly to helping the brand "Xu Lang peach blossoms" reach further and further.
