Nostalgia
People born and raised in districts are undoubtedly very attached to the name of the town. Towns have always been a source of pride for the people of each district. They possess both the modern characteristics of a developed urban area and many traditional historical and cultural values.
In Hai Duong today, each district usually has a town. Simply saying "go to the town to go to the market" or "go to the town" is enough; no need to mention the place name, everyone understands where you're going.
Now, the town is an administrative unit at the same level as a commune or ward, directly under the district level, serving as the district center and a densely populated area, primarily developing commerce, services, and small-scale industries.
In the near future, when the district level ceases to function and the commune-level administrative units are reorganized, these towns will no longer exist. Perhaps many people will greatly miss these towns as they are today.
Cam Giang (Cam Giang) is one of the towns in Hai Duong with many unique cultural features. Even the name Cam Giang, often translated as "brocade river" of this town, carries many historical stories.
Cam Giang is an ancient town in Cam Giang district, dating back approximately 400 years. In the 18th century, when Uy Nam Vuong Trinh Giang ascended the throne, due to a taboo against using his name, the name was mispronounced as Cam Giang. In 2019, based on Resolution No. 788 of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly , Cam Giang town was established after merging with Kim Giang commune. Cam Giang town returned to its beautiful original name.
The town is traversed by the Hanoi -Hai Phong railway line. The area along the railway tracks and the train station has also been a source of inspiration, giving rise to many famous literary works, especially those by the writer Thach Lam.
Even now, returning to Cam Giang, one can still find the ancient charm, blended with modernity, of an old district town. The small town remains as peaceful as ever.
It is expected that Cam Giang town will be merged with Dinh Son and Cam Hoang communes to form a new commune. When Cam Giang town ceases to be a town, many people will feel nostalgic and regretful.
Mr. Tran Quang Thong was born and raised in the town, and served as a cultural officer and town leader. His house still stands today along the railway line.
He was the one who proposed the unique set of street names in Cam Giang town with meaningful names. He is also an art enthusiast who has traveled around taking photographs and creating many works about this town. In his house, Mr. Thong still keeps many valuable documents about Cam Giang.
"When the town is no more, we also regret the loss of the place name, the name that has been associated with more than half of our lives. We only hope that the cultural and historical values, the stories of Cam Giang, will not be lost along with its name, but will be cared for and preserved by the authorities at all levels so that future generations can pass them on and develop them," Mr. Thong confided.
Not only Cam Giang, but many towns in Hai Duong also possess cultural beauties that are worth being proud of. Many young towns are still in the process of building and developing strongly.
Expectations for the future of communes and wards.
Despite some regrets, many residents expressed agreement with the plan and the necessity of reorganizing the current communes, wards, and towns.
In Binh Giang district, Ke Sat is a very special ancient town. Located on the border between several districts and provinces, it developed early on.
It is expected that, starting from July 1st, the town of Kẻ Sặt will merge with the communes of Hùng Thắng, Vĩnh Hưng, and a portion of the area and population of Vĩnh Hồng commune to form a new commune.
Mr. Bui Ngoc Ben, residing in Ke Sat town, although not born or raised there, came to work and live there, married a local woman, and has been closely associated with the town for several decades.
After listening to the Party branch secretary read out the proposed plan for rearranging commune-level administrative units for public consultation, Mr. Ben nodded in agreement. He also expressed regret, but he understood the necessity of rearranging and merging communes, abolishing the district level, and eliminating towns directly under the district.
"The reorganization of administrative units is necessary. The town will no longer exist, but people will still remember Ke Sat through Ke Sat gac rice crackers, Ke Sat pork patties... and the people of Ke Sat. I only hope that the town, now part of a larger commune, will develop even more strongly. To achieve that, personnel management must be given top priority, carefully and thoroughly considered so that even though the town's name is gone, the people will always be excited and hopeful for the day this place changes and takes on a new appearance," Mr. Ben shared.
In Ninh Giang district, Ninh Giang town is planned and developed as a center, serving as a gateway connecting the southern economic zone of Hai Duong province with Hai Phong city and Thai Binh province.
This is a rapidly developing town, serving as the economic and cultural center of the district. The town will soon merge with three other communes.
"Ninh Giang town is not only familiar to the people of Ninh Giang but also a popular destination for many people from neighboring districts and provinces. No matter what happens in the future, I still hope that Ninh Giang will continue to develop and become more prosperous and beautiful," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy from Ninh Giang town.
Like Ms. Thuy, many officials and citizens hope that after the reorganization, the towns will no longer exist, but their values and identities will remain, and the momentum of development will continue strongly.
