Intellectual property helps turn creative ideas into reality.

In the digital age, innovation is not only the key to businesses' competitiveness but also a decisive factor in a nation's sustainable development. And to protect innovative ideas, intellectual property plays a crucial role, providing the impetus for these ideas to become reality.

In 2025, with the theme “Intellectual Property and Music : Feeling the Rhythm of Intellectual Property,” the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) continues to call for attention and action from countries regarding the protection of musical works and creators. Through these activities, the community is raised awareness of the importance of intellectual property in creative fields, including music.

According to WIPO statistics, the global creative industry contributes approximately US$2.25 trillion annually to the economy and employs over 30 million people. In 2022, global exports of creative services reached US$1.4 trillion, a 29% increase compared to 2017. The total income of global creators increased by 7.6% in 2023.

According to WIPO and Brand Finance (an independent brand valuation and strategic consulting firm based in the UK), leading corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, which are increasingly valued at trillions of dollars, rely on intellectual property assets, from inventions and trademarks to trade secrets and software. When secured by intellectual property tools, these assets create an endless source of added value. This is clear evidence that, in the digital age, intangible assets, especially intellectual property, are the key to breakthrough development thanks to science and technology.

In Vietnam, the Party and State have identified science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as three strategic pillars to propel the country to become a developed, high-income nation by 2045.

In all three pillars, intellectual property plays a crucial role. In particular, Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo affirmed the goal of sustainably developing science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, contributing to Vietnam becoming a developed, high-income country.

It can be affirmed that intellectual property is not only a driving force for innovation and economic growth, and not only a valuable intellectual asset for individuals and businesses, but also a tool for protecting humanity's artistic treasures.

However, in today's digital age and with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, musical products, from handwritten sheet music to modern digital arrangements, can easily be copied and exploited illegally. Therefore, an effective and appropriate intellectual property system is essential to prevent this.

According to Ms. Vu Viet Hong, a lecturer in the zither department (Vietnam National Academy of Music), in music, AI is not just a technical tool but is also becoming a creative partner with artists. Although the relationship between artificial intelligence and music is an intersection of technology and art, opening up enormous creative potential, it also raises many new questions. AI is not replacing humans in music, but is becoming a companion, supporting artists on their journey to discover beauty and emotion through sound.

Experts also believe that the explosion of the digital music market, along with the streaming trend, has helped many artists become globally famous in the blink of an eye, with their songs or albums reaching millions of views in a few days, bringing them long-term revenue. With modern technologies helping to control and collect royalties for authors, otherwise, the intellectual property of musicians would be lost significantly... However, to protect the rights of these inventions, a strong and comprehensive intellectual property system is a prerequisite.

Legal tools to protect music and creators.

In fact, in the context of a world undergoing rapid transformation thanks to innovation and digital transformation, intellectual property rights are increasingly playing a crucial role in protecting creative achievements and promoting sustainable development.

It can be affirmed that, more than just a management tool, intellectual property is also a source of spiritual support for musicians… When a song is protected and the composer's name is recognized, this not only brings a sense of pride and security but also affirms individual artistic identity with financial and legal value. Protecting intellectual property rights will always be a crucial factor in promoting the strong development of the music industry. Therefore, to ensure sustainable development, it is necessary to raise awareness of science, technology, and innovation, in which intellectual property plays a particularly important role.

According to Mr. Le Huy Anh, Deputy Director of the Intellectual Property Office, technology is not only a supporting tool but also a driving force for change in the music industry. From inventions that improve sound quality to solutions for protecting music copyrights, technology is changing the way we compose, perform, and protect intellectual property rights in this art form.

Under the direction of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Intellectual Property Office has consistently identified intellectual property as one of the most important pillars of the national innovation strategy. Currently, the office is actively coordinating with relevant agencies, ministries, and sectors to organize programs to raise awareness of intellectual property, supporting the community in better understanding their rights and obligations in protecting intellectual property assets.

According to Luu Hoang Long, Director of the Intellectual Property Office, the office is finalizing policies and mechanisms, promoting institutional reforms, modernizing application processing procedures, and strengthening the dissemination of intellectual property knowledge in schools, research institutes, businesses, and the community.

In addition, many international cooperation initiatives are being implemented to help Vietnam access advanced intellectual property management models, promote the commercialization of intellectual property assets, and unleash the flow of innovation in society.

It can be affirmed that intellectual property has contributed to building a healthy, fair, and sustainable competitive environment. At the same time, it reminds society that music is not just entertainment, but also artistic labor that deserves to be cherished and preserved, to be passed on to future generations.
