Every year in late May and early June, people along the Da River in Bac Yen district rush to the river to catch bream. This year, people are excited because bream has a good harvest and good prices.
Candlefish in the Da River reservoir appear in large numbers in the districts of Quynh Nhai, Muong La, Bac Yen, Phu Yen, mainly from late May to early June and only peak for 15-20 days. Therefore, these days, people in Ta Khoa and Song Pe communes are using boats and fishing gear to gather on the river to catch candlefish. From Ta Khoa ferry, Song Pe commune downstream to Sap Viet village, Ta Khoa commune, every day there are about 20-30 large and small boats catching candlefish.
Mr. Dinh Van Toi, Song Pe commune, said: This type of fish usually goes in schools, swims relatively fast, so the motorboat must be good to catch up. On average, I catch 20-30 kg/day, some days I catch a school and it can be up to 50-60 kg. The fish are purchased by traders right at the boat, not brought to shore. The current selling price is 80-120 thousand VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is 2-3 million VND/day.
At Sap Viet boat station, Ta Khoa commune, the junction of Sap stream flowing from Moc Chau district to Da river, there are many large and small boats fishing for candlefish. One of the people with many years of experience in catching candlefish, Mr. Dinh Van Quynh, Sap Viet village, shared: In Bac Yen district, candlefish only appear in large numbers in the area from Ta Khoa wharf to Sap Viet wharf. The way to catch candlefish is to use a net shaped like a large net placed in front of the boat's bow, then run along the river, about 2-3 hours to pull up once to collect the fish. This type of fish sells very well. On peak days, I catch 70 kg, bringing in a good income.
According to observations, when swimming underwater, the candlefish has a transparent body, when caught, the fish is white, so this type of fish has many different names, such as candlefish, silver fish, glass fish, milk fish... Candlefish has a small body, only the size of a chopstick, soft like vermicelli, no scales, no bones.
Candlefish is suitable for deep-frying, garlic and chili frying, cooking with pickles, sour pineapple, sour soup, making patties, salads, stews, etc. Candlefish meat is chewy, fragrant, and sweet, so it is very popular. This is considered a specialty fish of the Da River, in the market, traders often sell it for 200-300 VND/kg.
Currently, on average, about 50 tons of candle fish are caught each year on the Da River from the districts of Quynh Nhai, Muong La, Bac Yen and Phu Yen.
The Da River is providing extremely rich aquatic resources, creating jobs, increasing income, and stabilizing the lives of local people, including candlefish. Nets used to catch candlefish have small eyes. Therefore, authorities strictly manage fishing activities. People use fishing nets suitable for the type of fish, avoiding overexploitation, contributing to the preservation and protection of sustainable aquatic resources.
