Just days after its launch, OpenAI's Sora app topped the download charts on the US App Store, surpassing ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
According to data from Appfigures , Sora achieved 56,000 downloads on the US App Store on its first day, ranking in the top 3 most downloaded apps. By October 3rd, the app had risen to the top spot.
For comparison, ChatGPT reached number one on its second day of release. During the same period, other apps ranked as follows: Grok (4th), Gemini (6th), Copilot (19th), and Claude (78th).
On September 30th and October 1st, Sora recorded a total of 164,000 downloads. This number surpasses many other AI applications during the same period, such as Claude from Anthropic (21,000) and Copilot from Microsoft (7,000), and is on par with Grok from xAI (56,000).
ChatGPT and Gemini had more impressive debuts, with 81,000 and 80,000 downloads on their first day of release, respectively. For objectivity, Appfigures only compared downloads in the US and Canada, as the apps had different release strategies.
For example, ChatGPT initially launched on iOS, exclusively for the US market. Grok, on the other hand, limits iOS users to the US, Australia, and India. Anthropic did not disclose details of the countries where Claude was released on day one.
Introduced on September 30th, Sora can create short videos using AI models. Combining social networking features, the app allows users to "borrow" ideas from videos created by others, share them on their personal pages, and follow those accounts.
Currently, Sora is only available on iOS and requires an invitation to join. Despite this limitation, the app remains at the top of the free app charts on the App Store.
“It’s amazing to see how far collective creativity can go. Our team is always striving for improvement and taking feedback into account,” Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, shared on social media on October 3rd.

According to CNBC , Sora integrates OpenAI's latest video and audio generation model, called Sora 2. The company says the model is capable of creating footage and sound with "high realism." The first version of Sora was released in February 2024.
OpenAI highlighted several security risk mitigation solutions surrounding the Sora app, including allowing users to control how their images are used on the platform.
Despite the measures taken, some disturbing videos continue to appear on Sora, including a clip depicting CEO Sam Altman shoplifting. This has sparked debate about the app's usefulness, risks, and legality.
On social media platform X , Altman emphasized that "it's easy to imagine the worst-case scenario of AI-generated videos," leading users into a vicious cycle of "sloppy content."
"Our team has put a lot of heart and thought into creating an interesting product without falling into that trap. We have many promising ideas," said the CEO of OpenAI.
