The author of the song "Song of the Southern Land" has passed away.

According to information from his family, musician Lu Nhat Vu, author of many famous songs such as "Saigon Girl Carrying Ammunition," "Beside the Monument to Uncle Ho," "Rest Assured, Mother," "The Sound of the Gong Crossing the Waterfall," "Song of the Southern Land," "The Little Boy Looking for His Father," etc., passed away after a period of serious illness, at the age of 89.

Composer Lu Nhat Vu, whose real name was Le Van Gat, was born in 1936 in Thu Dau Mot (Binh Duong). He participated in revolutionary activities from an early age. After the Geneva Accords (1954), he moved to the North and joined the Youth Volunteer Force. Due to his musical talent, he studied and graduated from the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, and worked in the Southern Song and Dance Troupe.

In 1970, Lu Nhat Vu was assigned to return to the South to work in the Liberation Arts and Culture Subcommittee. After the reunification of the country, the musician was assigned to work at the Institute of Music Research (later the Institute of Culture and Arts in Ho Chi Minh City) and successively held the positions of: Director of the Music Institute Branch in Ho Chi Minh City, Member of the Secretariat of the Vietnam Musicians Association, Deputy Secretary General of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, and Party Committee Member of the grassroots units of the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Composer Lu Nhat Vu has left a lasting impression with many songs such as " Beside the Monument to Uncle Ho," "Rest Assured, Mother," "The Sound of the Gong Overcoming the Waterfall," "Song of the Southern Land," and "The Little Boy Looking for His Father," which are loved by the public.

After the reunification of the country, Le Giang and Lu Nhat Vu participated in many valuable and enduring projects collecting and compiling folk songs from various regions, such as Ben Tre Folk Songs, Understanding Southern Folk Songs, Kien Giang Folk Songs, Cuu Long Folk Songs, Hau Giang Folk Songs, and Song Be Folk Songs…

In September 2024, due to a fall down the stairs, Lu Nhat Vu was rushed to the hospital. The resulting injuries left the musician unable to walk.

The family of musician Lu Nhat Vu announced that he passed away at 9:30 AM on March 29th at People's Hospital 115, at the age of 89. That evening, the embalming ceremony was held, after which the musician's remains were taken to the National Funeral Home in the South (5 Pham Ngu Lao Street, Ward 2, Go Vap District). The funeral procession will take place at 6:00 AM on April 2nd.

Composer Lu Nhat Vu was awarded the first State Prize for Literature and Arts, along with many other awards, medals, and decorations, including the Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Prize and the Prize for the Cause of Culture and Education ...
