Actor Keanu Reeves returns in 'John Wick 5'

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson shared this information at CinemaCon on April 1st. Chad Stahelski, who directed all four previous John Wick films , along with producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, and star Keanu Reeves, has grossed over $1 billion worldwide .

"Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica won't be coming back unless they have something truly extraordinary, something new to say about these characters and this world," Fogelson said, according to EW .

In a separate statement about John Wick 5 , Iwanyk and Lee commented: "It's important to bring John's story to the next level."

John Wick's fate remains uncertain after John Wick 4 was released in 2023, with an ending suggesting he died after a duel with the Marquis de Gramon (Bill Skarsgård). In the film's final scene, Winston (Ian McShane) and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) stand beside a tombstone inscribed with John Wick's name. However, a shot of Wick's dog looking back at his grave has led some to believe the assassin is still alive.

Months after the release of John Wick 4 , the film's director revealed that ending with such an ambiguous conclusion was a "very deliberate choice," suggesting that Wick is still alive.

"We had a different ending. We filmed an ending where you actually see John Wick at the end of the movie. So it's very clear that he's still alive. The audience we consulted absolutely loved this ambiguous ending," Stahelski told Empire magazine at the time.

Former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group CEO Joe Drake also suggested that John Wick 5 was in the planning stages during a meeting with investors in May 2023.

Drake confirmed: "We're building the world, and when the fifth film comes out, it will unfold naturally, developing naturally in the way we started telling the story."

Before returning for John Wick 5 , Keanu Reeves will appear in the John Wick spin-off, Ballerina , starring Ana de Armas. The film takes place between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4 , and is scheduled to be released on June 6th.

Two other spin-off films in the John Wick series are also in development: one focusing on Caine, the blind assassin from John Wick 4 played by Donnie Yen, and an animated prequel. Lionsgate announced that production on the Caine film, directed and starring Donnie Yen, will begin in Hong Kong later this year.

Keanu Reeves will voice John Wick in the animated prequel, focusing on his character taking down all opponents in a single evening, a feat dubbed the "impossible mission" in the film.
