Proactive screening
On Monday morning, the hallway of the Outpatient Department ( Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital) was quite crowded with patients waiting for their turn to be examined. In just the morning, the hospital received and examined nearly 300 people, including more than 80 who registered for cancer screening packages.
Upon receiving the examination results from the doctor, Mr. Dao Van H (63 years old), residing in Tan Thanh commune ( Lang Son province), said: “Recently, I have been feeling constantly tired and sometimes short of breath, so I went to Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital for a check-up and cancer screening. After a CT scan and some specific tests, the doctor concluded that I have a pleural tumor. Because the tumor is small (12x10 mm) and benign, I was advised to monitor my health regularly and adjust my diet and lifestyle.”

According to statistics, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital has conducted screening examinations at the hospital and community screenings for more than 17,100 people, recording approximately 300 new cancer cases. Some cancer groups with a high number of cases include: breast, thyroid, lung, colorectal, and stomach cancer… Thanks to early detection and timely treatment, many cases have shown positive progress.
After discovering a nodule in the left lobe of her thyroid gland, on April 20, 2026, Ms. Luan Thi L (35 years old), residing in Luc Nam commune, proactively went to Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital for a fine-needle aspiration biopsy. The results confirmed she had papillary thyroid carcinoma at a very early stage, so she was scheduled for surgery to completely remove the lesion. Thanks to early treatment, the patient preserved her thyroid function, did not require hormone replacement after treatment, and her life was not affected.
Dr. Vu Thi Duc, Deputy Head of the Outpatient Department (Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital), said: “Many types of cancer in the early stages often have no clear symptoms. Therefore, regular health check-ups and timely screening are especially important, helping to detect lesions early, improve treatment effectiveness, and reduce costs for patients.”
Improve treatment effectiveness
Along with promoting cancer screening and diagnosis in the community, Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital is implementing many advanced techniques to improve the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment.
Currently, the hospital employs a variety of screening methods such as: CT scans, gastrointestinal endoscopy, ultrasound, cancer marker tests, mammography, fine-needle aspiration cytology, etc., helping to detect many lesions early, even in their initial stages.

According to doctors, treatment experience shows that if detected in the early stages, many types of cancer can be treated effectively, prolonging life expectancy or even leading to a cure. Conversely, when the disease progresses to a severe stage, treatment becomes more complex, more expensive, and carries a greater risk of complications.

To improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital has recently focused on investing in modern equipment and sending its medical staff to participate in intensive training courses at central-level hospitals to access new techniques in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Many new and advanced techniques are available in cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment, such as: endoscopy for early detection of cervical cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and head and neck cancer; X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and histopathological examination…
Along with improving professional capacity, the hospital continues to coordinate with localities, agencies, and units to organize community screening programs; and strengthen communication to raise public awareness of the role of regular health check-ups and cancer screening.
"However, people need to have regular health checkups every 6 months or 1 year to detect chronic diseases and signs of abnormal damage early, especially those over 40 or with risk factors," advised Dr. Le Thi Huong, Deputy Director of Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital.
