Children aged 5-6 at Tan Yen Kindergarten experienced the activity "We are elementary school students". |
More than just a simple role-playing game, under the guidance of the teachers, children are introduced to many new skills at the primary school level: from sitting properly while studying, raising their hands correctly according to the rules, lining up neatly when entering the classroom, to managing and taking care of their personal school supplies.
Each activity and small challenge provides children with practical experiences, helping to foster independence and confident communication skills as they embark on a new chapter in their lives.
In addition, the school organized the "Journey of Growing Up with Your Child" program, with the participation of nearly 180 parents of 5-6 year old students, to exchange, answer, and share concerns related to the psychology, skills, physical development, and preparation of children before entering first grade. Through this, the school and parents can quickly understand the children's thoughts and feelings in order to provide appropriate support.
| Through programs designed to familiarize children with first grade, teachers from both levels have a favorable opportunity to exchange teaching methods and share experiences in caring for children during this transition period. Parents also gain insights into how to support their children. |
Ms. Phan Thi Hoa, Principal of Tan Yen Kindergarten, said: "Preparing children mentally before entering first grade will help them feel less apprehensive, more confident, and proactively adapt to the new learning environment."
Conversely, if children are not guided in learning and daily life skills, and are not psychologically prepared, they may easily feel confused and disappointed, thereby affecting their ability to adapt and integrate into a new learning environment.”
In a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere, the children of Suoi Hoa Kindergarten (Kinh Bac Ward) had the opportunity to visit the Suoi Hoa Primary School campus, meet their first-grade teachers, and get acquainted with the older students. This is an important first step in helping them better visualize their future learning environment.
The highlight of the program is a series of rich and engaging experiential activities on campus. Students get to explore functional classrooms such as the Computer Science, Science and Technology , Art, and Music rooms; visit the modern robot exhibition area; and see firsthand the creative STEM products made by the school's students.
The children were extremely excited to sit at the desks, look at the books, and interact with the first-grade students. The visit not only made the children more confident and assertive but also helped them get acquainted with the new learning environment. Through this, the children developed a greater love for their school and were better prepared psychologically for their first year of primary school.
Strengthening connections between preschool and primary school levels.
In preschool, children's primary activity is play; they learn through play, guided, encouraged, and motivated by their teachers. In primary school, the new learning environment requires children to complete tasks according to the class's schedule; they must possess some basic skills and knowledge, and maintain discipline...
The biggest challenges for children entering first grade are complying with school rules and regulations, establishing relationships with teachers, and completing assignments as required.

Teachers and students from Bich Dong Nightingale Kindergarten (Viet Yen Ward) visited Bich Dong Primary School. |
To address these difficulties, many preschools have proactively integrated pre-primary skills into their teaching programs. From a professional perspective, Ms. Hoang Thi Lan Huong, Head of the Preschool Education Department (Department of Education and Training), advises: “According to the preschool education program for 5-6 year old children of the Ministry of Education and Training , children only need to recognize and pronounce 29 letters proficiently; recognize numbers, quantities, and know basic addition and subtraction within the range of 10.”
Preschool teachers have already provided all this knowledge. Therefore, parents don't need to put too much pressure on their children or force them to learn the first-grade curriculum in advance. The most important thing is to focus on developing soft skills, communication skills, concentration and memory skills, self-care skills such as eating, dressing, using the toilet, and the ability to protect themselves in a new environment.”
The transition between preschool and primary school environments requires close coordination between the two levels. Inter-level exchange and experiential activities are essential. Through programs that introduce children to first grade, teachers from both levels have the opportunity to exchange teaching methods and share experiences in caring for children during this transition period.
Parents also grasp the methods of accompanying their children. As a result, children are placed at the center of consistent education, participate in group activities, and develop confidence and adaptability.
A child's preparation for first grade isn't just a backpack full of books; it's woven together by self-confidence, independence, and a burning desire to explore a new world of knowledge. The skillful and scientific support of the school, along with the encouragement of the family, is the strongest foundation, helping children confidently embark on this new learning journey.
