Despite being considered the stronger team, Uruguay started the match cautiously. In the 14th minute, Agustin Canobbio passed the ball to Federico Valverde, who unleashed a shot from inside the penalty area that went just wide of the Cape Verde goalpost.
In the 21st minute, Cape Verde were awarded a free kick from approximately 25 meters out. Kevin Pina unleashed a powerful low shot that left goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with no chance, opening the scoring for the African side.
Trailing by a goal, Uruguay were forced to push forward in attack. After a teammate's header hit the post, Maximiliano Araujo appeared at the right moment to head the ball into the net past goalkeeper Vozinha, leveling the score at 1-1 for "La Celeste".
But the action didn't stop there. In the 45th minute and beyond, Manuel Ugarte lofted the ball from midfield into the penalty area, where Maximiliano Araujo headed it to Agustin Canobbio, who rose high to head the ball past goalkeeper Vozinha, giving Uruguay a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, Uruguay continued to control the game but struggled to mount effective attacks. In the 61st minute, Mathias Olivera made a misplaced back pass, allowing Helio Varela to get the ball and beat goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who had come out of the penalty area. The 24-year-old winger then easily finished into an empty net, leveling the score at 2-2 for Cape Verde.
For the remainder of the match, Uruguay continued to dominate Cape Verde. However, due to a lack of attacking prowess, the South American team had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
After the second round of matches in Group H of the 2026 World Cup , Spain leads with 4 points. Uruguay is second with 2 points, but ahead of Cape Verde due to a higher total number of goals scored. Saudi Arabia is at the bottom of the table with 1 point.
