Strengthening support for rice farmers.

With the goal of improving the quality of An Giang rice, the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection is actively implementing activities to support farmers in cultivating rice sustainably, applying ecological and environmentally friendly technologies.

According to the Provincial Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department, implementing the plan to support rice farmers of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the unit has conducted training on rice cultivation knowledge applying the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology, built demonstration models, and organized workshops to summarize and evaluate the effectiveness of the models. Accordingly, training was provided to 2,861 farmers in 11 districts, towns, and cities in the province. The training content revolved around the Sustainable Development Project for 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice monoculture associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta; technical processes for producing high-quality, low-emission rice; land preparation techniques; straw management; and the establishment of planting area codes…

Simultaneously, during the 2024 autumn-winter crop season, the Sub-Department implemented four commercial rice production models following the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology, covering a total area of 200 hectares in the localities of An Phu, Chau Phu, Phu Tan, and Cho Moi. During cultivation, all models achieved higher efficiency compared to the control plots. The support of local authorities, the consensus and enthusiasm of farmers, and the smooth coordination of technical staff contributed to the high effectiveness of the models.

Supporting farmers in producing high-quality rice.

In terms of economic efficiency, the model rice field yielded an average of 6.7 tons/ha, approximately 200 kg/ha higher than the control field. In particular, the production of low-carbon rice, the application of the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with the cultivation of ecological flowers to attract natural predators, helped farmers increase profits by reducing costs for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. As a result, the average profit of the model field reached over 31.1 million VND/ha, 5.5 million VND/ha higher than the control field.

The Sub-Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine recognizes that farmers, when adequately trained in technical skills, will confidently apply the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology, helping to reduce investment costs, improve the quality of agricultural products, and protect the health of producers and consumers. Furthermore, replicating this model helps farmers enhance community spirit, contributing to increased economic efficiency and protecting the rural environment.

Despite achieving positive results, the implementation of the models also faced certain difficulties, such as: The majority of farmers are located within collective irrigation systems, making it difficult to apply alternating wet and dry irrigation techniques. Although farmers recognize the benefits of processing straw at the beginning of the season, they are still hesitant to adopt it. The fragmented and small-scale nature of farmer production also hinders collaboration and the application of model techniques…

Based on the results achieved, the Provincial Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine proposes continuing to implement the model more widely in subsequent rice seasons. This aims to eliminate the burning of rice straw in the fields after harvest, combined with the application of microbial preparations for treatment, utilizing organic resources, attracting natural predators to control pests and diseases, reducing input costs, addressing labor shortages, and ensuring the health and safety of producers. The application of techniques from the model also helps to better control and manage the fields, creating a large rice production area and attracting businesses to collaborate in consumption.

At the same time, it is proposed that sectors and localities in the province strengthen the dissemination of information on commercial rice production techniques according to the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology through mass media, helping farmers access new knowledge and scientific and technical advancements, and apply them to production to achieve higher economic efficiency. In particular, it is necessary to encourage farmers to actively participate in rice production under the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project, increasing profits, improving the quality of An Giang rice grains, and moving towards a green and sustainable agriculture.

The plan to support rice farmers helps them use rice-growing land efficiently, cultivate using proper techniques to improve production efficiency, protect the ecological environment, and improve soil fertility. In particular, it helps reduce irrigation water, nitrogen fertilizer, and CO2 emissions during production.
