Strengthening support for rice growers

With the goal of improving the quality of An Giang rice, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (TT&BVTV) actively implements activities to support farmers in cultivating rice in a sustainable manner, applying ecological and environmentally friendly technology.

According to the Provincial Department of Plant Protection and Information, implementing the Plan to support rice growers of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the unit deployed training on rice cultivation knowledge applying the "1 must 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology, building demonstration models, organizing workshops to summarize and evaluate the effectiveness of the model. Accordingly, training was provided to 2,861 farmers in 11 districts, towns and cities in the province. The training content revolved around the Project on sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region; technical process of high-quality and low-emission rice production; soil preparation techniques; straw management, building growing area codes, etc.

At the same time, in the 2024 autumn-winter crop, the Department will deploy 4 models of commercial rice production according to the "1 must 5 reduction" process combined with ecological technology, with a total area of 200 hectares in the localities: An Phu, Chau Phu, Phu Tan, Cho Moi. During the cultivation process, the models all achieved higher efficiency than the control fields. The support of local authorities, the consensus and enthusiasm of farmers and the smooth coordination of technical staff have helped the models bring high efficiency.

Support farmers to produce high quality rice

In terms of economic efficiency, the model field has an average rice yield of 6.7 tons/ha, about 200kg/ha higher than the control field. In particular, the production of low-carbon rice, applying the "1 must 5 reductions" process combined with growing ecological flowers to attract natural enemies has helped farmers increase profits, thanks to reduced costs for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. As a result, the profit of the model field reached an average of more than 31.1 million VND/ha, 5.5 million VND/ha higher than the control field.

The Department of Plant Protection and Development has found that when farmers are fully trained in technical aspects, they will feel confident in applying the “1 must, 5 reductions” process combined with ecological technology, helping to reduce investment costs, improve the quality of agricultural products and protect the health of producers and consumers. Along with that, replicating the model helps farmers enhance community spirit, contributing to increasing economic efficiency and protecting the rural environment.

Despite the positive results, the implementation of the models also encountered certain difficulties, such as: Most farmers are located in collective water lines, so it is difficult to apply the alternating wet and dry irrigation technique. Although farmers see the benefits of early-season straw treatment, they are still not bold enough to apply it. The fact that farmers produce in small, fragmented ways also causes difficulties in the process of linking and applying the model's techniques...

From the results achieved, the Provincial Plant Protection Department proposed to continue implementing the model in the next rice crops more widely. Thereby, aiming at the goal of not burning straw in the fields after harvest, combining the application of microbial products for treatment, taking advantage of organic resources. Attracting natural enemies to control pests, helping to reduce input costs, solving the labor shortage and ensuring the health and safety of producers. Applying techniques from the model also helps to control and manage the fields well, creating a large rice material area, attracting businesses to link up for consumption.

At the same time, it is recommended that sectors and localities in the province promote propaganda and dissemination of techniques for producing commercial rice according to the "1 must 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology on mass media, helping farmers access knowledge, new scientific and technical advances, and apply them to production to achieve higher economic efficiency. In particular, it is necessary to mobilize farmers to actively participate in rice production according to the 1 million hectares of high-quality rice project, increase profits, improve the quality of An Giang rice grains, towards green and sustainable agriculture.

The rice growers support plan helps farmers use rice land effectively, cultivate properly to increase production efficiency, protect the ecological environment, improve soil fertility. In particular, it helps reduce the amount of irrigation water, nitrogen fertilizer and CO2 in the production process.
