(HG) - Currently, farmers in the Mekong Delta and Hau Giang are entering the harvest season for the winter-spring rice crop. Instead of burning the straw, many landowners have sold it to increase their income, earning around 50,000 VND per hectare.
Straw harvesting isn't a very strenuous job, but it provides a source of income for many people.
Due to the increasing demand for straw, it is in high demand during each rice harvest. Each bale of straw, after being baled by machine, sells for 13,000 VND (including baling and transportation costs). On average, depending on the thickness of the straw, each hectare of rice field yields 12-20 bales, equivalent to 156,000 - 260,000 VND per hectare. The bales of straw are transported to the Mekong Delta provinces for consumption as feed for cattle, mulching, and mushroom cultivation, etc. On average, one truckload of bales of straw can process 50 hectares of rice fields per day.
