Accelerate the enforcement of the Anti-Deforestation Regulations.

The European Union's Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will apply to large and medium-sized enterprises from December 30, 2026; and to small and micro-enterprises from June 30, 2027.

Ahead of that deadline, many coffee producers and exporters are accelerating the digitalization of their supply chains to maintain market share, while numerous cooperatives and farmers are worried about keeping up with the roadmap due to a lack of resources, technology, and data management capabilities.

After nearly two years of implementation, in early May, Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company officially announced the completion of its sustainable development project in cooperation with the Netherlands Climate and Development Fund (DFCD) and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), marking an important step in integrating environmental-social-governance (ESG) standards into the entire coffee supply chain.

Through the implementation process, key raw material areas in Dak Lak , Lam Dong, and Son La have seen over 6,300 farming households directly participate, and more than 13,000 farmers have been trained in sustainable coffee cultivation and management practices. All participating raw material areas have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification and are integrated with a traceability system.

According to Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, with the development of a digital platform for managing raw material areas, the company's shipments can be traced from farm to export, gradually meeting the EUDR regulations - a policy that is putting great pressure on the global agricultural supply chain.

As a coffee exporting company, Simexco Dak Lak (2-9 Dak Lak Import-Export Company Limited) is a pioneer in implementing EUDR, having obtained two 4C-EUDR certifications. Notably, each year, the company trains tens of thousands of farmers on low-emission coffee cultivation practices in compliance with EUDR. Currently, the company has deployed a digital agricultural map for the coffee and pepper industries, covering up to 50,000 farming households; and operates a traceability system for each order. At the end of 2025, Simexco Dak Lak introduced a VR 360 (virtual reality) experience for customers attending the Anuga International Fair (Germany), recreating the entire supply chain from farm to factory, from cultivation to processing.

Unlike large businesses, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thao, Director of Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative ( Son La ), stated: The biggest difficulty is the uneven level of technological access among the people; the cost and methods of implementing traceability and data management are quite high and complex. Therefore, cooperatives need technical guidance and support policies to adapt to the EUDR roadmap. "Currently, the cooperative's coffee products are exported to the US and many EU countries, so if there are no timely adaptation solutions, the risk of losing the market is real," Mr. Thao shared.

Given the fragmented nature of coffee production in Vietnam, one viable solution for cooperatives and individual farmers to adapt to the EUDR is to engage in deeper linkages with export businesses.

The experience at Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company and Simexco Dak Lak has demonstrated the effectiveness of linkage programs. To make these linkages even more efficient, appropriate traceability tools are needed for each user group.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Thuy, Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Trade Office in Sweden, also covering Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Latvia, stated: Recently, the Center for Import Promotion from Developing Countries (CBI) has introduced several digital platforms to support businesses, cooperatives, and farmers in managing growing area data and tracing product journeys as required by the EUDR.

Specifically, tools like GPS Field Area Measure, Mappt Lite, Locus Map, Google Maps, or Google Earth provide basic mapping, allowing farmers and cooperatives to define farm boundaries and collect spatial data; ArcGIS, QGIS, MapSwipe, and Blue Marble Geographics offer professional spatial analysis for experts; Satelligence, LiveEO, and Space Intelligence use satellite environmental monitoring to track land-use changes over time and detect deforestation risks. Sourcemap, TraceX, and Osapiens help businesses track the flow of goods throughout the value chain and identify related environmental risks.

However, the application of these tools requires coordination among farmers, export businesses, business support organizations, and state management agencies to achieve the highest effectiveness and ensure full compliance with EUDR regulations.
