Having been informed by the hamlet leader, Ms. Thi Thuy, residing in Thai Tan hamlet, Son Kien commune, arrived at the commune's People's Committee early in the morning to participate in the job counseling and placement fair. Ms. Thuy enthusiastically said: "I came here hoping to find a suitable job to earn a monthly income and help improve my family's economic situation ."
Ms. Thuy's family consists of six people, including one who has her own family, two younger siblings who work as factory workers, and parents who are self-employed in the local area. Recently, Ms. Thuy has mainly stayed home as a housewife and has not had an income, so she hopes to find a suitable job. "After listening to the advice from the company representatives, I will think about it further and apply for jobs at companies in the province, near my home, so that I can both earn an income and take care of my family," Ms. Thuy shared.
Also residing in Thai Tan hamlet, Ms. Thi Dung attended the job fair hoping to learn about and participate in short-term vocational training courses. Ms. Dung stated: “My family has four members; my parents are construction workers, and my older brother is a factory worker in Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, I don't have a stable job, so I want to learn a short-term trade such as nail art, hairdressing, or makeup… so that after the course, I will have a skill and find a suitable job locally.”
Job counseling and placement services, creating livelihoods for the people, are among the solutions that the People's Committee of Son Kien commune is actively implementing in poverty reduction efforts. According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Kien commune, Do Tien Dung, Son Kien commune currently has over 20,000 people of working age. The majority of the people mainly live by agricultural production, including farming and livestock raising. However, the current labor market is undergoing many changes, requiring professional skills, job changes, and the creation of more sustainable livelihoods for the people. Therefore, the People's Committee of the commune is stepping up its job counseling and placement services. To date, the total number of trained workers with jobs in the entire commune is over 7,000, reaching over 75%, and the percentage of trained workers with degrees or certificates is 2,540, reaching over 27%.
In 2025, Son Kien commune planned and successfully implemented national target programs for sustainable poverty reduction, such as diversifying livelihoods, developing poverty reduction models; supporting production development; and developing vocational education… with a total budget of over 1.2 billion VND. In addition, the commune focused on housing support, mobilizing regular monthly assistance for poor households who are unable to work, elderly, or sick… In 2024, Son Kien commune had 75 poor households and 137 near-poor households (including 24 poor households and 5 near-poor households unable to work), with a multidimensional poverty rate of 1.5%, now down to 0.8%; average per capita income reached over 65 million VND/year. The commune currently has no temporary or dilapidated houses, contributing to the completion of criteria for building a new rural commune.
According to Ngo Quang Thanh, Party Secretary and Head of Hamlet No. 8: “Contributing to poverty reduction efforts, the hamlet's leadership has directed associations and organizations entrusted by the Social Policy Bank to facilitate preferential loans for economic development, with a total outstanding loan balance of over 13 billion VND. At the same time, we monitor the situation of each poor household, investigate the causes of poverty, and propose appropriate solutions. As a result, Hamlet No. 8 currently has only 24 near-poor households, 5 poor households, and over 85% of households have a relatively comfortable standard of living.”
To ensure sustainable poverty reduction, the commune is stepping up its efforts to raise public awareness about poverty reduction, especially by fostering a spirit of self-reliance and independence. The assessment of poor and near-poor households must be objective and transparent, avoiding the inclusion of ineligible individuals in the poverty category.
