For many years, during the dry season, Mrs. Tran Thi Dung's family, residing in Hamlet 4, Tra Phot Village, Giang Thanh Commune, has had to pump water from the nearby irrigation canal to store in large jars and then treat it with alum for household use. Recently, due to a broken water pump, she has had to use buckets to fetch water. Mrs. Dung said: "A few months ago, the local authorities installed water pipes and a water meter for my family. Hearing that the water supply station in Tran The Hamlet has just been completed and will supply water to the people soon, we are very excited. I hope to have clean water to use during the dry season soon."
As a neighbor of Mrs. Dung, Mr. La Van Bap's family, residing in Hamlet 4, Tra Pho Village, said that everyone was happy to hear that the water plant in Tran The Village had just been inaugurated and would supply water to the people before the dry season. Mr. Bap said: "During the recent Tet holiday, because many children and grandchildren came home, I bought 10 21-liter water containers for drinking. On normal days, I buy less. For daily use, I pump water from the pond in front of my house. With clean water soon available, my family no longer worries about water shortages."
Previously, the old Giang Thanh district had two water supply stations providing water for local residents: Dam Chit and Vinh Phu. Not far from the Dam Chit water supply station, Mr. Pham Hoai An, residing in Cong Ca hamlet, Vinh Dieu commune, said that his family had a water meter installed four years ago. “The water is clean and safe for my family and the surrounding residents. The price is applied according to government regulations. Since then, my family has always been assured of our water supply.”
According to the Economic Department of Vinh Dieu commune, the entire commune has 3,574 households using hygienic water. Of these, 2,865 households use water from the centralized clean water supply system, and 709 households use water from the household-scale water supply system. The Dam Chit and Vinh Phu water supply stations ensure water supply for the Vinh Dieu commune area.
In 2023, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Center of Kien Giang province (now An Giang province ) invested in the Phu My water supply system project in Tran The hamlet, Giang Thanh commune. The project had a total investment of 24.6 billion VND; a designed capacity of 1,200 m³ /day, a total length of approximately 8 km of primary pipeline, and supplied water to 1,943 households. To date, the project was completed and put into operation on February 9, 2026. However, in some areas, people's homes still lack water. This is due to incomplete connections between the main and secondary pipelines. Furthermore, approximately 500 meters of the main water pipeline along National Highway N1 in Ca Ngay hamlet, managed by the Provincial Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Center, remains unfinished, preventing the implementation of four local-invested secondary pipeline projects. This affects 375 households in the hamlets of Rach Go, Co Quen, Giong Ke, and Ca Ngay that do not yet have access to piped water.
Mr. Pham Quang Nho, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Giang Thanh commune, said that the commune has invested over 15.4 billion VND in 11 auxiliary water pipelines since 2023 to connect to the Phu My water supply system in the hamlets. The reason the connections have not been completed is that the thermal welding method is not feasible. The main pipeline from the plant already has water, and thermal welding connections would not guarantee a secure connection, so the connection method had to be changed to a clamp-type connection, resulting in delays in water supply to households. The commune has urged and required contractors and construction units to complete the connections by March 2026 so that people can have clean water during the 2026 dry season.
Mr. Nho said: “The ‘coverage’ of clean water in the central areas of the commune is supported by the local people. In the future, we will continue to pay attention and integrate funding to advise on investment to bring water to areas far from the center and repair dilapidated facilities, contributing to improving the quality of life for people in border areas…”.
| By the end of 2025, 57.5% of households in Giang Thanh commune will have access to clean water. It is projected that this rate will increase to 60% by the end of 2026 and reach 80% or more by the end of the 2025-2030 term. |
