"Shiels" on the beaches

Along the fine white sands of My Khe, Pham Van Dong, or Nguyen Tat Thanh beaches, it's easy to spot the distinctive yellow and red uniforms of the beach lifeguards. They are the first to arrive before dawn and the last to leave after sunset. In the scorching summer sun, these lifeguards with their tanned skin and sturdy physiques tirelessly stand guard, becoming a silent "shield" protecting the safety of tourists every day.

At Pham Van Dong beach, Mr. Phung Thuong, the head of the rescue team with 25 years of experience, still maintains the habit of observing the sea surface with extreme caution. “A team of four people is responsible for 500 meters of beach, each person in charge of a specific area, observing tourists and guiding them to swim in areas with safety buoys to avoid unfortunate drowning incidents. Since the beginning of the year, especially during holidays, there have been a lot of visitors. Sometimes, when the waves are big, the team has to rush out into the water to rescue people. For us, the safety of tourists is the greatest reward,” Mr. Thuong shared.

Currently, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang's tourist beaches has deployed 97 lifeguards, organized into 20 teams along a coastline stretching over 35.9km.

In addition to being stationed at fixed locations, this force also deploys mobile patrols using motorcycles and rescue boats to enhance rapid response capabilities. At beaches such as My Khe, Man Thai, and T20, where dangerous rip currents frequently occur, the rescue force is always reinforced with 100% of its personnel during peak hours, ready to be on duty throughout the night if there is a sudden surge in visitors. This responsible presence has contributed to building an image of Da Nang as a safe city.

During this year's summer tourist season, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang's tourist beaches continues to review, supplement, and upgrade many equipment and facilities serving rescue and relief work to enhance the ability to ensure safety for locals and tourists when visiting and swimming at the beach.

In addition, the unit continues to coordinate with relevant units to promote the application of technology in the management and assurance of maritime safety, including strengthening the surveillance camera system in some crowded areas, high-risk areas and key public beaches to support monitoring the situation and promptly detect any incidents that arise.

Creating an attractive tourism environment

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the city's tourism industry has developed very strongly in recent years, especially beach tourism.

According to statistics, the total number of guests served by accommodation establishments in the city in the first quarter of 2026 is estimated to reach over 4.2 million, an increase of 15.3% compared to the same period in 2025. Of which, international guests are estimated to reach over 2.34 million (an increase of 16.2% compared to the same period); domestic guests will reach over 1.86 million (an increase of 14.1% compared to the same period).

In particular, during the two holidays commemorating the Hung Kings' Day on the 10th of March and April 30th - May 1st, Da Nang was among the top provinces and cities in the country in terms of revenue and number of visitors, with 1.46 million visitors (an increase of nearly 35% compared to the same period last year), bringing in 5,700 billion VND (an increase of nearly 35%).

In Da Nang's economic development strategy, the marine economy is not only a key sector but also a crucial "lever" to promote service and trade industries. However, for the marine economy to develop sustainably, security, order, and environmental hygiene are considered core foundations. Recognizing this, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang's tourist beaches has implemented a multi-layered management system, coordinating closely with the police, border guards, and local authorities.

Mr. Tran Dai Nghia, Deputy Head of the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang's tourist beaches, emphasized that efforts to ensure security, order, and environmental hygiene are being intensified during this peak season.

“We are not only focusing on rescue operations but also stepping up public awareness campaigns through the coastal loudspeaker system so that residents and tourists understand the regulations, voluntarily protect their property, and dispose of waste in designated areas. Regarding sanitation, the unit has requested the Da Nang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company to maximize its workforce. There are task forces cleaning up throughout the night from 7 PM to 10 PM in key areas and starting morning shifts at 4 AM to ensure that when visitors come to the beach, the sand is always in the cleanest and most beautiful condition,” Mr. Nghia said.

Maintaining the "clean, green, and beautiful" appearance of beaches is not simply a matter of sanitation, but also a branding issue. Aiming for long-term goals, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang's tourist beaches is actively calling on beach-loving clubs and groups to participate in clean-up efforts, while also coordinating with border guards to strictly address acts that harm the marine ecosystem.
