Tet for young people

After completing traditional rituals and exchanging New Year greetings with relatives, young people begin their own unique way of celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year). From quiet cafes and movie theaters to bustling check-in spots, young people are enjoying time for themselves and friends, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere in the early days of spring.

For Do Bao Ngoc, a third-year student at the Diplomatic Academy, despite her busy study schedule in Hanoi, she and her family maintain the tradition of returning to her hometown to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with her grandmother in Au Lau ward, Lao Cai province. After spending the first two days of Tet visiting relatives and friends, Ngoc finally has time for herself.

Ngoc's destination on the evening of the second day of Tet (Lunar New Year) was a familiar cafe on Quang Trung Street. Accompanying her was Do Bao Tram, a first-year student at the British University Vietnam and also Ngoc's cousin, who lives in Au Lau ward. The two sisters study in different places, and only get to meet once a year. Bao Ngoc shared: "The first two days of the new year are a time for extended family gatherings and traditional rituals to show respect and filial piety to grandparents and ancestors. Tonight, Tram and I want some private time. Conversations help us connect, share our upcoming plans, discuss academic pressures, or simply enjoy the tranquility after the Tet holiday reunion."

For Bao Tram, going for coffee during Tet (Lunar New Year) is not only a way to relax but also a way to recharge. Choosing a quiet corner away from the hustle and bustle, the two sisters enjoy Tet in their own way.

Do Bao Ngoc (wearing a striped shirt) and her younger sister Do Bao Tram chose a quiet corner in the cafe to chat.

After fulfilling his family responsibilities, Mai Duc Anh, a third-year student at the University of Construction residing in Yen Bai ward, chose a different option for enjoying Tet (Lunar New Year). Instead of going to a cafe, Duc Anh and his close friends from high school met at a movie theater. Duc Anh shared: “My family highly values the custom of visiting relatives during Tet, so on the first and second day of Tet, I spent almost all my time with my parents. Only on the afternoon of the second day did I have time to hang out with my friends. Watching movies at the beginning of the year is not only for entertainment but also an excuse for us to get together after a busy year of studying.”

Movie theaters are a popular destination for many young people during Tet (Lunar New Year).

According to observations, the CGV Vincom Yen Bai cinema has seen a surge in young customers during these days. The diverse range of Lunar New Year films, from comedy to action, has met the varied entertainment needs of young people. During the Tet holiday, the cinema is almost always full. Like Duc Anh's group of friends, many young people see this as a time to relax, recharge, and prepare for a new year with its challenges ahead.

The screenings were always fully booked throughout the day.

Instead of choosing a coffee shop or a movie theater, Hoang Mai Lan, a first-year student at the Foreign Trade University residing in Van Phu ward, chose to visit the Provincial Museum's first campus, where many spring-themed exhibitions are taking place.

The weather in the early days of the year was incredibly favorable, with warm, dry sunshine, perfect for spring outings and photography. Mai Lan and many other young people appeared in graceful traditional ao dai dresses, carefully choosing camera angles to capture the most beautiful moments with family and friends.

“I really enjoy wearing the traditional Vietnamese dress (áo dài) during Tet. This year, the weather is beautiful and sunny, so I chose the Provincial Museum, Branch 1, as the place to take photos because the space here is both nostalgic and modern, and it symbolizes our province. After visiting relatives for Tet, taking photos helps me appreciate the beauty of spring more clearly and is also a way for me to love traditional values even more,” shared Hoang Mai Lan.

Many young people flocked to the check-in point at the Provincial Museum's first campus - where numerous exhibitions celebrating the Lunar New Year were taking place.

At the Provincial Museum's first campus and other public places like August 19th Square and the pedestrian street, it's not uncommon to see groups of young people dressed in traditional ao dai and other vibrant outfits. They're not only taking photos to post on social media but also cherishing the moments spent admiring the streets and the changing colors of their hometown in the spring.

The concept of "celebrating Tet" among young people today has changed significantly, reflecting a dynamic generation that knows how to enjoy life while still cherishing traditional values, family, and the culture of their homeland.

In reality, the concept of celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year) among young people today has changed considerably, but still retains core values. They are a dynamic generation who know how to enjoy life while deeply cherishing traditional values, family, and their hometown culture. As the Tet holidays gradually pass, the commemorative photos and heartfelt stories they preserve become motivation for them to embark on a new year of study and work. For young people now, Tet is not just a time for rest, but also a time to "define" themselves, strengthen emotional bonds, and further appreciate the original values of the traditional Vietnamese New Year.
