If appointed, she would become the first Thai citizen to hold a senior executive position at this specialized agency of the United Nations.
According to a Cabinet decision on May 19, the Thai Ministry of Commerce nominated Ms. Pimchanok for the positions of Deputy Director-General and Assistant Director-General of WIPO. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs was tasked with completing and sending the official nomination letter to WIPO in accordance with the organization's procedures.
The Thai government believes that the nomination demonstrates the country's growing capacity and role in participating in global intellectual property policy-making, and affirms its desire to strengthen Bangkok's influence in international intellectual property matters.
Ms. Pimchanok Pitfield is a veteran diplomat in the field of international trade. Prior to her appointment as Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the WTO and WIPO in Geneva from February 2021, she served as Commercial Counsellor in Brussels and Director-General of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).
She graduated with a first-class distinction in English from Chulalongkorn University, holds a Master's degree in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University (USA), and completed her PhD in International Relations at the same institution.
The nomination process is coordinated by the Director-General of the Intellectual Property Office of Thailand, Auramon Supthaweethum, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Vuttikrai Leewiraphan. According to Ms. Auramon, the selection results are expected to be announced within four months, before the new term begins on October 1st.
If selected, Ms. Pimchanok would contribute to enhancing Thailand's international standing and strengthening its voice in the development of global intellectual property standards and policies.
WIPO is a United Nations agency responsible for promoting and protecting intellectual property rights worldwide , including patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The organization is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Thailand has been a member of WIPO since 1989.
