Mr. Nikorndej said that Thailand has submitted an official application to join BRICS at a recent ministerial meeting of the bloc.

"We hope to receive a positive response and be accepted as a member of the group at the upcoming summit in Russia," he said.

The BRICS 2024 summit is scheduled to take place in October in Kazan, Russia. The country has also held the BRICS presidency since January this year.

The group initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Earlier this year, it began expanding its membership with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joining.

The group's expansion is a major move as it aims to eliminate the US dollar's dominance as the world 's reserve currency.

Besides BRICS, Thailand is looking to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), after being invited by the Paris-based organization to open accession discussions.
