Aston Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 to win the Europa League.

On the morning of May 21st at Besiktas Park (Istanbul, Türkiye), Aston Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final of the 2025-2026 season.

Aston Villa will be the first English team to win a European trophy in the 2025-2026 season. Unai Emery's side won the UEFA Europa League with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg (Germany). Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers were the three goalscorers.

Freiburg had early opportunities, but the German team couldn't maintain the pressure. They held possession for 51% of the game – meaning they weren't outplayed – but only managed 4 shots with a mere 0.27 expected goals. Aston Villa didn't dominate possession, but their attack was far sharper. The Premier League side had 17 shots, 6 on target, 4 dangerous chances, and 3 goals.

The difference between the two teams lay in their ability to create and capitalize on opportunities. In the first half alone, Aston Villa created three times as many shots as Freiburg. The German team's defense collapsed towards the end of the half, conceding two consecutive goals less than 10 minutes apart.

In the 41st minute, Morgan Rogers passed the ball to Youri Tielemans inside the penalty area. The Belgian midfielder finished with a one-touch shot, curling the ball past goalkeeper Noah Atubolu to open the scoring. In injury time, John McGinn assisted Emiliano Buendia, who finished into the top corner to make it 2-0.

After the break, Freiburg dominated possession (60%) and needed to score to rekindle their hopes, but they failed to make a difference. The German team only had one shot. Conversely, Aston Villa dropped deeper, waited for opportunities, and continued to be dangerous in their attacks. In the 58th minute, Buendia played a through pass to Rogers, who calmly finished to make it 3-0.
